Ben Bradshaw, the Labour MP and former culture secretary, told reporters earlier he was "very sorry Pat [McFadden] is leaving the front bench" and he was an "excellent spokesman on Europe".

Discussing Jeremy Corbyn's own voting record, he said: "I certainly think it's a challenge for someone who's voted against his party more than other in history to impose his own will based on loyalty."

He expressed concern about the proposed new arrangement in which shadow ministers can dissent from the backbenches. "Is Jeremy Corbyn going to speak from the backbenches if he disagrees with party policy?

"When he became leader he said he wanted people to be able to disagree respectfully. That seems to have changed. Now he seems to want to impose his views on others, not sure that's sensible way to proceed."

He added: "The Tories are doing great damage but what is dominating the news? Corbyn's team briefing against good, hardworking members of the shadow cabinet. This is no way to build a credible opposition and government. We have to do better than this."

  3. Party in 'uncharted territory', says Labour MPpublished at 11:21

    BBC News Channel

    Stephen Kinnock

Stephen Kinnock, Labour MP, has said former minister Jonathan Reynolds would be "sorely missed" from the Labour frontbench and said he was a "valued colleague".

He said the reshuffle had been "messy" and wasn't the party's "finest hour".

He said the party was in "uncharted territory" and there was a "natural tension" between Jeremy Corbyn's historic rebelious behavior and his current role as party leader conducting a "loyaltly driven reshuffle". He said Mr Reynolds resignation was an illustration of that.

He said he didn't "understand fully" what has been agreed between the Foreign Secretary Hilary Benn and Jeremy Corbyn on what he is publicly allowed to say and needed clarification.

  4. Jonathan Reynolds: Pat McFadden not disloyalpublished at 11:18

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Jonathan Reynolds, the Labour MP who resigned from his position as shadow rail minister this morning, has explained his decision, saying: "Personally I like Jeremy Corbyn... it's reasonable he wants a more coherent, disciplined frontbench but that's not what I think the party needs."

Speaking about the comments which reportedly led to Pat McFadden's sacking, he said:

    Quote Message

I don't think it could be interpreted as disloyalty, I don't think many people could disagree with him. That's when I decided it was time to serve the party in a different way."

Mr Reynolds also said he could not endorse the "world view of the Stop the War coalition" which Jeremy Corbyn has a close relationship with.

    Quote Message

I cannot in good conscience endorse the world view of the Stop the War coalition, who I believe to be fundamentally wrong in their assessment and understanding of the threats the UK faces.

    Quote Message

The security and well-being of my constituents must always be my first consideration, and I therefore believe my colleague Pat McFadden was right to condemn those who would to any degree absolve ISIS for their actions following the atrocities in Paris."

The shadow foreign secretary, Hilary Benn, was said to have been the number one target in the reshuffle, after his speech backing military intervention in Syria in opposition to Jeremy Corbyn. But Mr Benn has kept his job, apparently amid fears that his sacking would spark a mass walkout.

Mr Benn insisted he hadn't been silenced when he spoke to reporters outside his home this morning, saying:

I haven't been muzzled. I'm going to be carrying on doing my job exactly as before."
