  12. First Tory reshuffle dig in Commonspublished at 14:42

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Proceedings are under way in the House of Commons and we have had the first dig from the Conservative benches towards Labour over its as yet unfinished shadow cabinet reshuffle. At the start of Health questions, health minister Alistair Burt wishes the Commons Speaker a happy new year and then extends similar greetings to "familiar faces in the shadow cabinet". I don't think that will be the last reshuffle-related refrain from the Tories over the course of the next few hours.

  13. Ken Clarke: EU situation 'pretty extraordinary'published at 14:41

    BBC News Channel

    Ken Clarke

Ken Clarke, one of the Tories' most pro-European voices, is doing the media rounds to express his disappointment at the decision to allow ministers to campaign for EU exit while remaining in the cabinet. He tells the BBC News Channel that ministers should resign on such matters of principle in the knowledge that they can criticise the government without fear or favour and return to office later "if their talents are needed again".

    Quote Message

To stay in office free to actually attack the government on a fundamental question of Britain's role in the world is a pretty extraordinary situation. Even Gladstone did not have members of his own government busily arguing against Home Rule."

  16. EU decision 'wrong for the country'published at 14:05

Some more reaction to David Cameron's decision to allow cabinet ministers to campaign on either side in the EU referendum. Alan Johnson, who is leading Labour's pro-EU campaign, says the decision reflects internal Conservative divisions and "jockeying for position in a post-David Cameron leadership contest". In contrast, he suggests Labour will campaign "clearly and firmly" for the UK to remain within the EU. For the SNP, Stephen Gethins says the PM appears to have "zero confidence" in his ability to negotiate a deal on EU membership that can win the backing of many of his MPs.

    Quote Message

The fact that he cannot even convince his own Cabinet to back him shows just how weak he is. This might be the right decision for the Tories, but it's the wrong decision for the country."

  17. Corbyn right to take 'tough decisions'published at 14:00

    The World at One
    BBC Radio 4

Labour MP Cat Smith, a prominent supporter of Jeremy Corbyn, says he is showing real leadership and the willingness to take "tough decisions" by moving colleagues. She suggests the recent Syria bombing vote showed the shadow cabinet was out of line with the rest of the Parliamentary Labour Party and Labour members as a whole and that Mr Corbyn has the right to build a team around him that better reflects the broad swathe of opinion. She defends the sacking of Michael Dugher, suggesting he "spent more time attacking the leadership than he did the Tories" in recent months. Mr Corbyn, she adds, is being held to a different standard by the media in terms of reshuffle management than previous Labour leaders.

  20. Labour MP: Hard left 'can't win the day'published at 13:45

    The World at One
    BBC Radio 4

Labour MP Angela Smith brands the current shake-up of Jeremy Corbyn's top team as the "longest reshuffle in history" and says it "does not inspire confidence" in the leadership. She urges Mr Corbyn to keep "respected voices" such as Hilary Benn and Maria Eagle in place to prove that the party is a "broad church", saying they are "absolutely crucial" to ensure Labour gets back into government. She says she hopes the "hard left will not win the day" as a result of the changes that are happening, claiming the left of the party "tends towards control rather than bridgebuilding".
