  3. Nigel Farage and Tory backbencher join forces on EU leave campaignpublished at 12:58

    Nigel Farage and Peter Bone

Peter Bone, a Conservative MP and UKIP Nigel Farage have joined forces to campaign for the UK to leave the EU. Mr Farage said past differences were "irrelevant" now as they campaign together.

Mr Bone said it was a cross-party campaign. He said they were talking to ministers about the campaign but refused to say who.

Nigel Farage said they wanted Boris Johnson to join, along with other high profile figures, and even joked about the prime minister maybe becoming an out campaigning.

Mr Bone said that when asked, the prime minister had said he would "consider" joining after he finishes the negotiation.

  4. Shadow minister wanting to 'keep ship afloat' and says Labour differences not as big as reportedpublished at 12:55

The Labour MP for Darlington Jenny Chapman has told BBC Tees she asked to switch jobs from justice to the shadow education team.  Explaining why she wanted to serve under Jeremy Corbyn, she said:

    Quote Message

You’ve got to do what you think is right. For me, I feel that I want to be part of developing policy within the Labour Party. I didn’t feel that I wanted to leave at this stage. I completely respect those who have done, who were working in defence and policy areas, who felt that the chasm was too wide to be able, with good heart, to continue in their jobs. Likewise, I think we all have to respect those of us who decide that they do want to continue. I want to make this work. I want the Labour Party to do well.”

    She went on to add:

    Quote Message

I think it’s important that we try to do our best to keep this ship afloat but there is a lot less disharmony within the PLP than it looks in the media. I know the papers love to write stories about rivalry and people falling out but it isn’t like that. People are getting on very well… I think the differences between somebody like me, who’s seen as centre-left and Jeremy, seen as far-left, are exaggerated and I think there’s far more that we agree upon than we disagree upon. Most of us are trying very, very hard to make this work and take the fight to the Tories.”

  5. UK Trident renewal is 'not part of arms race'published at 12:46

    Julian Lewis

Julian Lewis, the Conservative MP and chairman of the defence select committee, said Ken Livingstone was wrong in calling the UK a "side show" when it came to amount of nuclear weapons it possessed. He said "we can inflict unacceptable damage" on other countries.

He denied renewing Trident would make the UK part of the nuclear arms race, saying the UK had the minimum amount to protect its security.

  6. Ken Livingstone hopes for Labour to agree position on Trident before summerpublished at 12:44

    The Daily Politics

Ken Livingstone, who is heading Labour's defence review, has said he hopes the party will have reached a position on the future of Trident soon. Speaking on the Daily Politics, Mr Livingstone said "if we are lucky, it could happen before Cameron organises a vote in the House of Commons or it could take right through to the summer".

He added there was a lot of "academic research" to go through first. Mr Livingstone said he would have been happy to work on this with the former Defence Secretary, Maria Eagle, who supports renewing the nuclear deterrent and was demoted this week and replaced by Emily Thornberry.

He said the defence review would "look at the facts" but said there were a lot of people who would rather the Government spent money on flood defences rather than on upgrading Trident.

  8. Ken Livingstone says UK Nato membership 'doesn't really matter'published at 12:38

    The Daily Politics

Former Mayor of London, Corbyn ally and co-chairman of Labour's defence policy review, Ken Livingstone, has said it didn't matter whether the UK is in Nato as the Cold War was "over".

    Quote Message

My main view on this is that it doesn't really matter whether you're in NATO or not terribly much because the cold war is over. If we're to stay in NATO, the question is what's its role. Invading more countries in the Middle East? I'm not in favour of that."

Mr Livingstone said he was sure that it was one of the issues which would be debated during the process of reviewing Labour's defence policy.

  9. Ken Livingstone denies already deciding against Trident renewalpublished at 12:35

    The Daily Politics

Former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, who is co-chair of Labour's defence policy review, denied that he had made up his mind to not renew the UK's nuclear weapons system.

He said it would be "suicide" to launch an attack on Russia, saying the UK only had "enough to start a war, not to win a war".

Mr Livingstone said America and Russia had "vast arsenals" when it came to nuclear weapons while the UK and France were just "side shows".

He insisted, however, that he could back renewal of Trident if someone could persuade him it was vital for the UK's security.

Ken Livingstone said Jeremy Corbyn and Hilary Benn had obviously come to "some sort of understanding" to avoid a repeat of the Syria debate where the two men spoke from the Labour front bench on opposite sides.

  12. Pat McFadden undermined Corbyn, says Ken Livingstonepublished at 12:22

    The Daily Politics

    Ken Livingstone

Ken Livingstone, a former mayor of London and a Corbyn ally, says that Pat McFadden, former shadow Europe minister, had been disloyal, over his comments in the Commons about terrorism. Mr Livingstone said they were made to undermine Mr Corbyn.

He said he disagreed with the statement that Mr McFadden made in the Commons, in which he said that terrorism is only the action of the attackers rather than the fault of the West. Mr Livingstone said Tony Blair had been told by the security services that the risk of terror attack would be increased by the Iraq War, as was shown, said Mr Livingstone, by the messages subsequently left by terrorists.

  13. Ken Livingstone defends Diane Abbott commentspublished at 12:20

    Parliament

    Mhairi Black

SNP Mhairi Black is leading a backbench debate on women's state pension age in the House of Commons.

The debate is looking at the effect of the equalisation of the state pension age on women

She said she does disagree with the principle of state pension age equalisation, but doesn't disagree with the way it was handled. She said changes to pensions were not adequately communicated.

  18. Farmers better off outside the EU, says Owen Pattersonpublished at 11:50

    Owen Patterson

Britain's farmers would be better off outside the EU, former environment secretary Owen Paterson has claimed.

The Eurosceptic Conservative MP said Britain would be free to set its own subsidies and - crucially - its own environment policies.

He said the "dotty idiocy" of EU directives had made flooding on British farmland worse.

Britain's farmers received £2.3bn in direct subsidies from the Common Agricultural Policy in 2015.

  19. Corbyn has 'complete loyalty' from new shadow foreign ministerpublished at 11:35

The newly appointed shadow foreign affairs minister said Jeremy Corbyn has his "complete loyalty".

Fabian Hamilton said he was "absolutely delighted" with his new role as it tied in with his former experience.

He also said he was excited to work with Foreign Secretary Hilary Benn who he said was his "good friend and neighbour".

He said there was "no reason" why Jeremy Corbyn shouldn't take his time during a reshuffle or consult widely:

    Quote Message

Why is it a criticism that he's consulted widely? What exactly is the pressure to do it in 3 hours? Jeremy has always been an open honest and decent person. He has my complete loyalty."
