  9. Prayers to be held for Labour MP Jo Cox at her local churchpublished at 16:18 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

    BBC News Channel

    Rev Paul Knight

A vigil is being planned tonight for Jo Cox at St Peter's Church in Birstall, near Leeds, at 20:00 BST, local vicar Rev Paul Knight tells the BBC News Channel.

Mrs Cox is in a critical condition after suffering serious injuries in an apparent shooting and stabbing attack in her Batley and Spen consittuency.

    Rev Knight says:

    Quote Message

We're concerned now for Jo of course and we'll be praying for her in the community."

  10. Nick Clegg: 'Jo Cox is a lovely decent person, full of goodwill to everybody'published at 16:13 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

Former deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, a long-time friend of Jo Cox, says his thoughts are with her and her family, friends and colleagues.

    Quote Message

I am deeply shocked as someone who knows Jo. She is a lovely decent person, full of goodwill to everybody. My heart goes out to her and everybody affected. But also it is such a vile affront to our democracy. One of the great things about our democracy is that anybody can just wander in and see their MP in their weekly surgeries. That violence against Jo, although that is the most important thing... is also violence against our democratic values and very proud democratic traditions."

  14. Sarah Champion on Jo Cox: 'I feel so emotional about this'published at 15:55 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

    BBC News Channel

Labour MP Sarah Champion says she "can't stop shaking" over the attack on fellow MP Jo Cox.

The Rotherham MP says: "I feel so emotional about this. Jo is the most fantastic woman."

She tells the BBC News Channel:

    Quote Message

What I need people to know is she's a tiny woman - she's slight, she's five foot nothing. And a lion as well - she fights so hard for the things that she believes in. I just can't believe that anybody would do this to her. Some people you meet are incredibly genuine and warm and open and want to help others. That's Jo. For that to happen to her today, it's obscene."

More details are emerging about Labour MP Jo Cox, who was attacked in her Batley and Spen constituency today.

The 41-year-old was elected to the seat at the last general election in 2015.

She is a Remain supporter in the EU referendum and both official campaigns have suspended their operations as a mark of respect following the attack.

She is married with two children, graduated from Cambridge University in 1995 and has worked as an adviser for former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown's wife, Sarah, and Baroness Kinnock.

Ms Cox has been a vocal advocate for the victims of the civil war in Syria and abstained in last autumn's contentious vote on taking British military action in Syria.
