  2. British values will 'prevail' despite killing, says Osbornepublished at 21:38 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

The attack on Jo Cox was an assault on the values of "freedom, liberty and justice", Chancellor George Osborne has said in an emotional speech at Mansion House, in the City of London.

    Quote Message

People are free in this country to live their lives as they choose and express themselves without fear. Society will protect their right to do so and hold to account those who disregard our laws. Today's horrible events are an assault on all of these values. But we know that these values, no matter how they have been challenged in the past, have always prevailed, prevail today and they will always prevail. For they are the values of Great Britain, our great democracy.

He said MPs' accessibility to constituents was a virtue of the UK's political system.

    Quote Message

To be an effective representative, all of us who are MPs engage with their communities, talk to everyone and anyone, hold constituency surgeries and must be prepared to stand up and argue publicly for what we believe. Jo did all of these things. She will never know how many lives she helped transform. Today, doing that job, she senselessly lost her own life.

  3. Sarah Brown: The Jo I knowpublished at 21:11 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

Sarah Brown, wife of former prime minister Gordon Brown, worked alongside Jo Cox on a global campaign on maternal mortality.

Despite the serious nature of the cause, she said the progress they made in changing governments' policies and budgets to save mothers' and children's lives made for a "positive experience".

    Quote Message

Jo brought an energy to that campaign, a vivacity and a determination that helped really make a difference. Jo was such a lively, bright, bubbly person. A very infectious sense of humour, always very positive. And would always put such energy behind everything that she did. Really committed to helping the most marginalised, the poorest families and children around the world. That's always been the Jo I know.

And she spoke of Jo Cox's roots, her husband and two young children.

    Quote Message

She was so delighted to represent her home area in Batley and Spen. This has just been so heartbreaking. This is something that's so difficult to understand happening in our own country. I know (her husband) Brendan has made a beautiful statement this evening where he's wanted to surround those children with love but also make sure they hold all the hatred in an act like that at bay."

A report out earlier this year by psychiatrists working with the Home Office, reported at the time in the Guardian, external, suggested four out of five MPs had suffered intrusive or aggressive behaviour and some feared going out in public.

While MPs are protected by high security measures in Parliament, it is a different matter in their constituencies.

But can more be done to improve their security? Read more

  5. Powell: Jo Cox was wonderful womanpublished at 20:47 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

Shadow Education Secretary Lucy Powell said the loss of her friend and colleague of 20 years, Jo Cox, was "absolutely devastating".

    Quote Message

"Jo was a wonderful, wonderful woman, parliamentarian and mother, wife and her life has been taken through an act of warped hatred and we are all poorer for it. She loved life, she had a wonderful life while she was here and she would want us to celebrate that life now."

  6. Keir Starmer: 'Unique' Jo Cox cared for people around the worldpublished at 20:35 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

Former Director of Public Prosecutions, now Labour MP Keir Starmer said Jo Cox's colleagues were finding it difficult to come to terms with the idea that somebody "defined by love and compassion should be killed in this way".

    Quote Message

If you read any of the tributes to Jo it is obvious she was hugely respected across the House. She was much-loved, she was warm, she was engaging, she was generous. Many of us were with her just the other night, celebrating having been in Parliament for a year together. She was unique and she will be very sorely missed.

Talking about MPs' security, he said it was "important" constituents had access to MPs but that meant there were security risks.

    Quote Message

Jo was the sort of person who would have wanted to be in amongst her constituents, trying to sort out problems. She always fought for a better life for everybody she represented and everybody she cared about around the world.

  7. Corbyn: Jo Cox 'committed to human rights'published at 20:26 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

Jo Cox's family 'can be proud of everything she did' - Corbyn

    Quote Message

In Parliament, she was respected across the whole house as somebody with a deep commitment and deep passion for human rights and justice. She leaves behind a husband, a wonderful man who likewise spends his life campaigning for human rights and justice. And two young children who will never grow up to see their mum again. They can be proud of everything she stood for.

  8. Jo Cox's death: 'an assault on democracy'published at 20:22 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

    James Landale, diplomatic correspondent writes...

The ability of MPs and their staff to engage with constituents goes to the heart of our parliamentary democracy.

MPs can represent us here at Westminster only because every week they go back home and meet us face to face.

There will inevitably be another debate about MPs' security. Many are often subject to physical attack.

But politics can't happen from behind a ring of steel. Jo Cox's murder is not just an awful tragedy. It is also an assault on our democracy.

  12. Laura Kuenssberg: Day was improved if you bumped into Jo Coxpublished at 19:01 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

    Laura Kuenssberg
    BBC political editor

    Jo CoxImage source, PA

It's an over-used word these days, but Jo was a star. She was brave, funny, and clever.

In Westminster she was one of those rare people who, whatever was going on in politics that day, however much backbiting there was, however many insults were being thrown around, the day was always improved if you bumped into her for a chat, a cup of tea, or heard her speak fearlessly and with compassion in the Commons.

But a conversation with her was just as likely to turn to her young kids, or the family's houseboat on the Thames, as it was to talk about the latest political machinations.

Jo was an MP who cared deeply about her party, and how politics can make a difference not just here, but around the world.

But more importantly she was a mum, a wife and a daughter who broke into ready smiles when she talked about her family. That's what I'll remember.

  13. Unite leader Len McCluskey: 'We must honour Jo Cox'published at 18:45 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

Len McCluskey, leader of the Unite union, said Jo Cox died "doing what she believes in and was passionate about".

    Quote Message

This is the most appalling crime. Two young children have lost their mum, Jo's husband has lost his wife and a family has had a deeply loved member taken from them. Our deepest condolences go to Jo's husband, their children, her wider family, and to the Labour Party to whom she was very dear.... We must honour her in the best way possible, to carry on her work of uniting people and never letting division or despair win the day."

  15. In full: Brendan Cox's statement following the death of his wife, Jo Coxpublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

    Jo CoxImage source, PA

Brendan Cox, the husband of Labour MP Jo Cox,  said:

    Quote Message

Today is the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. More difficult, more painful, less joyful, less full of love. I and Jo's friends and family are going to work every moment of our lives to love and nurture our kids and to fight against the hate that killed Jo. Jo believed in a better world and she fought for it everyday of her life with an energy, and a zest for life that would exhaust most people. She would have wanted two things above all else to happen now, one that our precious children are bathed in love and two, that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her. Hate doesn't have a creed, race or religion, it is poisonous. Jo would have no regrets about her life, she lived every day of it to the full."

  17. 'Hard to find the words'published at 18:14 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

    Nick Robinson
    Presenter, Radio 4 Today

People like me are paid to find the right words. Words to describe, to analyse, to explain. Words that match the moment.

Today is one of those days when it is very hard to find the words which convey the shock that I - that all those who are in politics or report on it - feel at the news that an MP has been murdered on the streets of Britain.

Jo Cox - a popular and respected Labour member of parliament, a young mother and a campaigner for the rights of refugees - was shot and stabbed by a man outside her constituency surgery. She was vulnerable to attack because she was, like so many MPs, available to anyone who wanted to see her with any grievance.

Her death is a reminder that our elected representatives, who are so often demonised for living separate lives from the rest of us, actually all too often live in our communities, in our streets worrying about the same things that we do.  Unlike us, though, they open themselves up not just to criticism and abuse but to assault by those who disagree with them.

We do not know the exact circumstances of this attack. The police insist that it was "localised" - ie not linked to any global terror threat. There are, though, suggestions that it was political. If that turns out to be true it is a reminder of one other thing too. The need at all times to respect those who disagree with us and to understand that anger, fury and rage are not the same as passion or belief.

It is fitting that today the cacophony of this referendum campaign is briefly on hold.

  20. Kezia Dugdale: the loss of Jo Cox 'is shared by people around the world'published at 18:04 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale has hailed Jo Cox as "an extraordinary woman" who "devoted her life to helping people in the darkest places in our world".

    Quote Message

There will be time to talk about what the savage murder of an elected representative means for our democracy - but that's for another day.Today we mourn the loss of one of our own.... Our hearts are broken by the loss of one of our country's brightest hopes. We mourn not just the woman she was but the loss of everything she would have achieved. Our thoughts and love are with her husband Brendan and her children. That their pain and loss is shared by people across the Labour family and people around the world is testament to how special the life Jo led was. In time we hope that will be some comfort to them.”
