  2. Burnham to issue warning over 'hard Brexit' under the Toriespublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

Andy Burnham is to say that a so-called "hard Brexit" - which is leaving the single market and EU customs union - "will hit the poorest people hardest and deepen division" according to the website LabourList, external.

"The shadow home secretary will argue that Britain risks 'burning its bridges' and being left isolated under Theresa May’s approach," the article says.

Mr Burnham is expected to add: "Labour must face up fully to this fact: millions of our lifelong supporters voted to leave the EU and voted for change on immigration."

But Conservative Robin Walker, Minister for Exiting the European Union, said: "Labour cannot make a success of Brexit because they don’t think Britain can thrive outside the European Union - setting their face against millions of their own lifelong supporters.

"Many Labour MPs still don't even accept that we should leave the EU."

  3. Home secretary alleges that Jeremy Corbyn 'wants unlimited immigration'published at 10:03 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    Amber RuddImage source, PA

Home Secretary Amber Rudd has said that "that Jeremy Corbyn wants unlimited immigration - and presides over a Labour Party that is too divided, incompetent and distracted to lead our country".

She added: “While Labour have lurched from one disaster to another this week, we will get on with the job of building a country that works for everyone."

  4. Owen Jones hopes for a positive speech from Jeremy Corbynpublished at 10:00 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    Victoria Derbyshire

    Owen Jones

Columnst Owen Jones says Jeremy Corbyn could set out a positive vision in his leader's speech, saying "look at the great things this country has achieved".

Mr Jones tells the BBC's Norman Smith that people on the left - including himself - can appear "a bit miserable, a bit dour" - but Mr Corbyn could say: look at what "a great society, one of the richest countries in the world, can build".

He rejects comparisons with "demagogue" Donald Trump but says Mr Corbyn has tapped into "an anti-politics mood" and is one of the "insurgent" political figures, including Bernie Sanders and Mr Trump in the US.

  6. Listen: Migrants make 'huge contribution' - Corbynpublished at 09:28 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

Jeremy Corbyn has urged people to recognise the benefits of immigration to the UK.

The Labour leader will use his party conference speech in Liverpool to pledge to reinstate a fund to mitigate the impact of migration on communities.

But he said migrants made a "huge contribution" to the British economy and many from Europe, the Caribbean and Africa were working in the NHS.

  7. Gordon Brown: Peres 'will be remembered as a peacemaker'published at 09:11 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

Former Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown has paid tribute to Shimon Peres.

"Shimon Peres will be remembered as a peacemaker - mourned on every continent by men and women committed to ending war," Mr Brown said.

“He understood the importance of negotiation because he understood the cost of war. He was not an idealist for peace out of vision alone but because he had lived through times of conflict.

“His personal journey through life challenges us all to think how best we can promote peace and reconciliation.”

  8. Immigration should be 'sustainable politically and socially' says Labour MPpublished at 09:11 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    Stephen Kinnock

Labour MP Stephen Kinnock says Jeremy Corbyn is right to focus on "integration" but there needs to be a focus on "immigration" too.

People voted in the EU referendum "for a sense of control" over the movement of workers from country to country, he tells the Today programme.

He proposes working with different sectors of the economy to determine how many workers are needed and introducing "some kind of points-based system or criteria-setting system" - rather than "just pulling a number out of the air, as David Cameron did, which is just ridiculous".

Immigration needs to be within "the bounds of what is sustainable politically and socially" Mr Kinnock argues. A government needs to say: "We've got a handle on this, we've got this under control."

Is Jeremy Corbyn happy for the UK to leave the single market along with the EU?

"That is open to negotiation," the Labour leader says. He will only confirm that "we want access on an equitable basis with the rest of Europe".

He dismisses any comparison between him and US presidential candidate Donald Trump, when presenter Mishal Husain suggests both "defied the odds" to rise to their current positions.

"So did Leicester City last year," Mr Corbyn replies. "Lots of people defy the odds sometimes."

  15. Jeremy Corbyn on the impact of migrationpublished at 08:22 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn defends the party's policy of opposing more grammar schools. Grammars tell 10-year-olds that some are first class and some are second class, he tells Today.

"We should be treating every child equally. What the government is doing is the very opposite."

Mr Corbyn says there needs to be a new "migrant fund". Without a fund for areas with high migration, public services might struggle and a "blame culture" might develop, he says.

He will not put a figure on the funding required but "the last one (introduced when Gordon Brown was PM) was £50m. I think it would need to be much more than that now."

The Labour leader says he was concerned about "groups being brought in from eastern Europe... to undercut local wages". He says this has been tackled across the EU.

  16. Corbyn says return on public investment would be 'enormous'published at 08:15 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

Ahead of his big speech to the Labour conference, Jeremy Corbyn told the Today programme that the country "is becoming more and more divided".

Many young people cannot afford their own homes and there is a lack of council housing, he says. He argues that Labour's plans for "an investment-led economy" would increase tax receipts and fund public services.

He is asked about Labour's plans to put £100m in an investment bank. He insists that, while this would increase borrowing in the short term, "the return would be enormous".
