  4. Scottish Tory leader pressed over differences with UK governmentpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

    The Daily Politics

    Ruth Davidson

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson does not back Theresa May's expansion of grammar schools for Scotland which, she notes, had a separate education system even before devolution.

She is asked on the Daily Politics about her support for the UK remaining in the single market. "I wanted us to remain in the European Union," she says, but repeats her earlier pledge to put her "shoulder to the wheel" now the UK has voted Leave.

Ms Davidson also backed saying to EU citizens in the UK that "you are welcome here".

"The government hasn't said that," presenter Andrew Neil says - but Ms Davidson says she believes ministers will be able to ensure their rights.

The government says it wants to guarantee EU nationals already living in the UK a right to stay but that it wants to ensure a reciprocal deal for Britons living abroad.

  6. Number 10 'won’t reveal designers of Philip May's clothes'published at 12:58 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

    The Huffington Post

Breaking with tradition, Number 10 will not be releasing the designers and prices of the clothes worn by the prime minister’s spouse on the last day of party conference.

It is customary for these details to be released after the prime minister’s partner joins them on stage after the final speech of conference. But Philip May has broken with the practice, previously criticised by some as sexist.

    Theresa MayImage source, Getty Images

Theresa May says the government's values are "about doing something, not being someone".

The PM argues: "While many see government as the problem, I know it can be part of the solution too."

She recalls previous prime ministers including Disraeli, Churchill, Attlee and Thatcher and says they illustrate "the good that government can do".

The current government faces "a moment that calls us to respond and shape a nation once again", she argues, and says it must "step up".

    Quote Message

Whether Leavers or Remain I say: come with me and we'll write that brighter future. Come with me and we'll make that change. Come with me as we rise to meet this moment. Come with me and together let's seize the day."

"My ambition is for Britain to be a great meritocracy," Theresa May declares.

"United we can do great things. We saw that in the summer in Rio."

Olympic success came about partly because of "John Major's Conservative government's determination", she argues, in setting up the national lottery which has provided funds for sport.

She also pays tribute to Alistair Brownlee, who helped brother Johnny over the line in a race in Mexico.

"When one of us falters, our basic human instinct... is to help them over the line," the PM says.
