  18. 'We are leaving the EU to be a fully sovereign country' - Maypublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

The prime minister says the 1972 European Communities Act will be repealed in the next Parliamentary session - an announcement she made on Sunday - and "the authority of EU law in this country ended forever".

It is "too early to say" what agreement will be reached with the EU and providing "a running commentary" would not be "in the national interest", she claims.

    But she adds:

    Quote Message

We are not leaving the European Union to give up control over immigration again... We are leaving to be a fully sovereign and independent country - and that deal is going to have to work for Britain."

The prime minister insists that the UK is not stepping back from its international commitments.
