    The SNP's Westminster leader Angus Robertson tells the committee that when his party looked at measures to redress the gender balance it was met with some "reticence".

    However, he says the steps taken in local government elections could be replicated at a parliamentary level. 

    He elaborates that representation must be considered at office and cabinet level, not just individual seats.

    According to the Daily Telegraph, China wants to do more business with post-Brexit Britain, the country’s ambassador to the UK said, as he praised the City of London and Britain’s financial prowess.

    Britain is keen to strike more deals with China, external, so the warm words from Liu Xiaoming will encourage the government in its plans to increase non-EU trade.

    The ambassador also hinted that China will tie its plans for Britain to the success of the Hinkley Point nuclear plant, however, indicating that it expects good treatment in major projects, following the delays to the plant’s approval over the summer, external.

  6. Pound rebounds amid Brexit debate latestpublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

    The pound has recovered some of its losses after Prime Minister Theresa May's amendment to today's Labour Brexit motion on Commons scrutiny of the Brexit process.

    The pound was trading 1% higher against the dollar at close to $1.23.

    Sterling has been sliding since Mrs May announced on 2 October that the formal Brexit negotiation process would start by the end of March 2017.

    Traders sold the pound, fearing the effects of a UK exit from the single market.

    According to the Daily Mail, external, former Treasury minister Liam Byrne was ready to quit public life after his infamous note declaring there was "'no money'' left was made public when Labour left government in 2010.

    His Liberal Democrat replacement as chief secretary to the Treasury, David Laws, broke with convention when he disclosed details of the letter Mr Byrne wrote as he was clearing his desk.

    The 15-word note was repeatedly used against Labour as evidence that it failed to take the country's finances seriously.

    Russia has condemned Boris Johnson's call for demonstrations outside its London embassy as "shameful".

    The foreign secretary said on Tuesday that he would "like to see" a protest against bombings of the Syrian city of Aleppo, which are being blamed on Vladimir Putin's forces.

    But Moscow, which denies the claims, accused him of "Russophobic hysteria".

    And the Stop the War Coalition said protests in the UK would not "make a blind bit of difference".
