  20. Lib Dem candidate 'not certain' she will stand in Richmond Park by-electionpublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 26 October 2016

    The Daily Politics

The Liberal Democrats' parliamentary candidate for Richmond Park has suggested it is not certain she will be the candidate in the by-election triggered by Zac Goldsmith.

Asked whether there might be calls for a candidate with a higher national profile, Sarah Olney told the Daily Politics that a shortlist would be put to the local party for members to choose from.

“We’re going to have a discussion about it,” she said. “There will be a shortlist, it will be put to the local party and it will be for them to decide.”

Ms Olney was selected as the parliamentary candidate by local party members in July. Lib Dem party rules require candidates to be ratified however before a by-election takes place.

“I am currently the candidate,” Ms Olney added. “I was selected by the local party at a hustings back in the summer. We just need to go through a further process to confirm who the candidate is going to be in the by-election.

“There will be a process, there will be a shortlist, I don’t know who else will put themselves forward, but that is the process.”
