Steve Hilton, David Cameron's former adviser in Downing Street for several years, says he believes Donald Trump won the US election because Americans could see in him "someone who might make a difference to their lives".

Mr Hilton, who is now based in California, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that while incomes have risen for the first time this year since the recession "50% of Americans are earning less today than 17 years ago - that's what really explains what's going on".

"I understand very well the reaction in the UK and around the world of real shock to what's happened and of great anxiety and concern, but I feel it's misplaced."

  10. Will there be a quick US-UK trade deal?published at 08:53 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

Experts have been predicting what Trump's victory will mean for the UK. Will the two countries do a swift trade deal after Brexit? "I could see that happening," says Kori Schake, who was senior policy adviser to Republican presidential candidate John McCain in 2008, "especially since the EU seems unwilling to move forward with the US-EU deal.

"A bilateral agreement with Britain could be a huge opportunity for Trump to prove he's in favour of 'the right kind of deals'. But whether that would constitute a good deal for Britain is more difficult to say."

Looking back to earlier this year, the BBC reported that stopping Donald Trump from coming to the UK risked turning him into a martyr.

During a three-hour House of Commons debate, Paul Flynn said Mr Trump's call to ban Muslims from the US was "extremely dangerous" but barring him from the UK risked being seen as anti-American.

However, SNP MP Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh said a ban would be justified on the grounds of "religious harmony".

A petition advocating a ban at the time attracted 574,000 signatures.

The debate, which took place in a packed Westminster Hall committee room, ended without a vote.
