It is put to John McDonnell that although wages have stagnated employment has been going up.

Robert Peston reflects that some commentators have said this is because the cost of employment in the UK is lower and there is a risk Labour's plans would bring a growth in unemployment.

    Mr McDonnell says "absolutely not".

"We're the only major developed country where we've got growth but wages are stagnating or going backwards," he adds.

"All we're asking for is fairness".

Mr McDonnell is asked about plans that trade unions could negotiate sectoral wage deals - something Peston describes as a "revolution" over how pay is set.

Mr McDonnell says collective barganing has declined over the last 20 years, which has eroded wages.

He says we can't live in a society where British nurses are reportedly using foodbanks because of the wages they get.

He is asked about the 20-point plan to end the "rigged economy" in the workplace and it is put to him that it is the biggest shift of power to the trade unions since the post-war period.

Mr McDonnell says it is more about giving people security. He says zero-hour contracts will be ended under Labour.
