  1. The Brexit effect?published at 03:24 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

Hilary Benn says Labour is having a "very good night and a very good morning" in Leeds, where he's MP for the city's Central constituency, although full results are yet to be declared.

He admits it's a "mixed night" for his party across the country and says Labour "needs to win people's trust and confidence".

Asked whether Brexit had been an issue at the polls, he recalls speaking to a former UKIP voter on the doorstep who said he would vote Labour this time around because the EU referendum had been dealt with.

  2. Labour 'gains first council'published at 03:15 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

Labour has gained control of Plymouth from the Conservatives after winning nine of the 15 seats declared so far, reports the Press Association. It says the party now has at least 29 of the 57 seats on the council.

It is currently too close to call in Wandsworth.

Professor Tony Travers has told the BBC that "Labour are getting larger swings in the marginal wards".

These "could make a difference," Prof Travers said.

Swings in both directions have been reported, with Conservatives making gains in some of Labour's strong holds.

BBC London's Political Editor Tim Donovan says "we're in recount territory" in some wards.

We now have 19 key wards in from London and they show a 1.5% swing from Conservative to Labour, far short of what Labour needs to pick up anything other than perhaps Barnet, but in contrast to the position outside of London where there is so far a 1% swing from Labour to the Conservatives.

This is clearly not an election at which either party has moved decisively ahead of the other.

  7. Leader hobbledpublished at 02:56 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

Labour started the day with a 41-seat lead in the west London borough of Ealing. But if it holds on to power, it'll have been no stroll in the park for leader Julian Bell.

He's reportedly hobbling round the count complaining of severe blisters, having won a competition between Labour activists to walk the most steps on polling day.

Apparently, he completed 36510 paces before midnight. It's a long road to power.

  8. Labour 'to hold Sheffield'published at 02:52 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

We're hearing that Labour's hold on Sheffield town hall is mathematically safe, despite the party losing a couple of seats in the wake of a row about trees being felled around the city.

  9. Derby leader loses to UKIPpublished at 02:50 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

  12. Justine Greening: Wandsworth Labour landslide 'isn't going to happen'published at 02:37 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Justine Greening

Justine Greening has said the "predicted Labour landslide isn't going to happen" in Wandsworth.

But the Conservative MP for Putney admitted it had been a "mixed picture".

"As predicted Labour will pick up some seats," she said.

She said her party were "fending off quite successfully a Labour onslaught" because "as local Conservatives we've run a very positive campaign".

  13. Conservatives 'losing Trafford'published at 02:35 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

Conservative backbench 1922 Committee chairman Graham Brady believes his party has lost control of the Greater Manchester borough of Trafford. The MP for Altrincham and Sale West, which is in Trafford, says it's "tremendously disappointing" to lose power after 14 years and suggests voters didn't realise how tight many of the wards were.

He says local, rather than national, issues were at play, adding: "My concern is that many of my constituents are going to potentially face the consequences of a less competent council."

Polling expert Prof Sir John Curtice says that after the declaration of four wards in the borough, the swing to Labour measured more than 10%. "There seems little doubt that the Conservatives are gong to lose control of this council in a predominantly Remain-voting area," he adds.
