    BBC News Europe correspondent Gavin Lee says the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier has been "praising Theresa May for negotiations and I think for what she's been going through the past few days to try and hold up this deal".

    He said: "The consensus of the 27 ambassadors appears to be 'keep calm and don't provoke' - the sort of advice you'd get to deal with an angry bear."

    "They know how unpredictable it is in the UK.

    Before being an MP, Steve Barclay was an insurance company lawyer and then a regulator for the Financial Services Authority, his website says.

    He also worked at Barclays bank as head of anti-money laundering and sanctions.

    He lives outside Wisbech in Cambridgeshire with his wife and two children.

    He was elected to Parliament in 2010 and spent four years on the Public Accounts Committee, before becoming a government whip in 2015.

    In 2017, he became a Treasury minister and then this year took up a role as minister of state at the Department of Health.

    Downing Street confirm that Amber Rudd, who resigned as home secretary in April, will be returning to the cabinet as the Work and Pensions Secretary.

    She will replace Esther McVey who stood down from the position yesterday.

    BBC political correspondent Nick Eardley says it could well be Monday before the 48 letters needed to trigger a vote of confidence in the prime minister are submitted.

    While it is still possible the threshold could be met today, he says "it does feel like a bit of the momentum has gone".

    However, he says one minister has told him that many MPs will be going back to their constituencies to judge the mood in their local Conservative associations - and some may decide to submit a letter next week if their members don't like the deal.

    Former Brexit minister Steve Baker has said he believes the Conservatives are "very close" to receiving the 48 letters needed to trigger a vote of confidence in the prime minister.

    However, he said the number was more likely to be reached next week than today.

    He told the BBC News Channel: "The only person who knows the number is Sir Graham Brady [chairman of the 1922 Committee of backbench MPs].

    “Sufficient people have told me that I think we are very close but exactly when it’s not for me to say.”

    The Conservative MP Chris Green is the latest to declare publicly that he has submitted a letter calling for a vote of no confidence in the prime minister.

    A member of the Brexit-supporting European Research Group, he has represented Bolton West, a constituency which voted leave in the referendum, since 2015.
