  13. Welsh First Minister will support second votepublished at 15:37 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2018

    BBC Wales News

    Carwyn Jones

A new referendum on Brexit should be held if Theresa May is replaced as prime minister and no general election is called, says Wales's First Minister.

Carwyn Jones has so far said he would only support a new Brexit vote if a general election were held and the result failed to break the deadlock.

But he told BBC Wales the current situation - with two cabinet ministers resigning on Thursday - was "one of the worst crises I've seen in politics".

He added: "If this ends up with a leadership election in the Tory party, which just leads to a new prime minister who then carries on without any kind of mandate from the people, that would be completely wrong.

"At that point if there is no election there has to be a referendum."

    BBC News Channel

    Chris Bryant

Labour MP Chris Bryant said talk of a leadership election is a "distraction".

He told BBC News: "I respect the dutiful element of Theresa May.

"[But] I think unfortunately her strength has become her weakness as her stoicism and fortitude sometimes means that she is not able to change course - and she needs to change course.

"It is a bit like a tree that doesn't bend in the wind ends up snapping and that is my fear."
