The government has long sought a UK-wide customs arrangement as a way to avoid customs checks on both the Irish land border and along the Irish Sea.

However, Theresa May's plan was for this customs union to be temporary - a stop-gap measure to avoid a hard border in Northern Ireland.

However, now it is believed that a UK-wide customs union is to be implemented straight after Brexit.

This means it would have to be decided whether or not the UK can seek, sign and implement its own trade deals, or whether it will still make use of the free trade agreements the EU currently has with third countries.

Ardent Brexiteers may argue that a UK-wide customs union that is implemented immediately after Brexit does not amount to the UK taking back control of its trade laws.
