  4. 'The conversations in the corridors of power go on'published at 12:20 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Nick Eardley
    BBC politics correspondent

Around every corner in Parliament today there are Conservatives deep in conversation.

Theresa May’s aides talking tactics with ministers; Brexiteers analysing their chances.

On the face of it, the PM looks in a good place. The vast majority of those MPs who have declared their intentions are backing her.

But... there’s always a but. Mrs May’s opponents are adamant this doesn’t tell the whole story.

Firstly, they say, government ministers and aides will always pledge support so the fact 150 plus have done so isn’t a surprise.

Secondly, they point out the vote is confidential and are adamant some who have pledged support will vote against the PM later away from prying eyes.

Others think the margin could be close and ponder what authority Mrs May will have if 100 or more of her colleagues vote against her. The indications are Mrs May wold stay on, but would she be able to lead her party efficiently?

The PM argued in Downing Street this morning that getting rid of her will help Labour and could mean no Brexit.

But her opponents in the Conservative Party are arguing the opposite today - that the DUP are unlikely to come back on board until Mrs May goes and that is the main risk of a general election.

The truth is, we won’t know for sure until the result is announced tonight. And so the conversations in the corridors of power go on.
