Sir Graham Brady told Theresa May over the phone last night that she would be facing a vote of no confidence.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, the chair of the 1922 committee would not say how many letters he had received, just that the threshold had been passed.

"She was very keen that the matter should be resolved as rapidly as reasonably possible," he said.

"That is something I was keen to facilitate, so we made sure the announcement was made this morning before the London markets open."

Asked what Mrs May's reaction was to the news, he said: "it would be difficult for anybody to be surprised by the turn of events.

"Clearly there has been inaccurate speculation at many points over recent months and weeks, and by last night it had become accurate."

"She was very keen that the matter should be resolved as rapidly as reasonably possible," he said.

"That's something that obviously I was keen to facilitate so we made sure the announcement was made this morning, certainly before the London markets opened."

  11. Who has submitted letters?published at 08:14 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

Letter of no confidenceImage source, Steve Baker

Theresa May will face a fight for her leadership after at least 48 members of her own party put in writing that they have lost confidence in her.

Any time the chair of the 1922 Committee of backbench Conservatives - Sir Graham Brady - receives letters from 15% of the party's MPs, a secret ballot is triggered.

If Mrs May wins, they cannot challenge her premiership for another year.

But, if she loses, there will be a leadership election and she will not be allowed to run.

See which MPs have submitted letters here.

  13. May to make statement at No 10published at 08:10 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Downing Street

Theresa May will make a statement later this morning outside 10 Downing Street, a Number 10 source has said.

  14. How the leadership challenge workspublished at 08:08 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

MPs will hold a secret ballot this evening: if Theresa May wins, she will be immune from challenge for a year.

But if she loses, there will be a leadership contest, and she would not be able to stand.

The 1922 Committee sets the timetable for the contest.

Tory MPs then choose two candidates to present to a vote of the wider membership of the party.

If necessary, they whittle the field down to two with a series of ballots where the lowest-ranking person is eliminated after each round.

Then it is time for the party members to vote for the winner. The two candidates would be expected to take part in debates to put their cases forward to members before the final voting deadline.

If there is only one candidate, that person becomes leader with no need for a vote from members.

Unless there is a general election, the winner of any Tory leadership contest would also be expected to become prime minister.
