  1. What just happened?published at 23:13 British Summer Time 1 April 2019

Well, it's been another eventful day in Parliament.

Here's a summary of what happened.

    • After nearly four hours of debate, MPs have for a second time failed to back any of the alternative proposals to Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit plan.
    • None of the four motions were approved in indicative votes, although Ken Clarke's proposal for a customs union came closest, being defeated by just three votes.
    • Meanwhile, Conservative MP Nick Boles made a dramatic announcement shortly after Commons Speaker John Bercow read out the vote results - saying he was leaving the party because of frustration about its inability to compromise. His motion, dubbed Common Market 2.0, gained the support of Labour and the SNP, but was still defeated by 21 votes.
    • On Tuesday, the cabinet will be meeting again to decide how to proceed.

We're going to bring our live coverage to an end here - but our news story is continuing to be updated with the latest developments.

As the graphic below shows, more MPs voted for the proposal tonight than in the first round of indicative votes - but more also voted against it.

  4. Federation of Small Businesses: 'Chaos continues'published at 22:57 British Summer Time 1 April 2019

The Federation of Small Businesses sees today's events in Parliament as evidence of "yet another failure of our political process".

FSB national chairman Mike Cherry says: "Many small businesses will be thoroughly exasperated at yet another day of total stalemate."He adds: "Prolonged uncertainty will leave the UK’s millions of small firms unable to plan, invest or grow. Those who have managed the expense and resources of planning contingencies face mounting costs the longer this chaos continues.”

  11. More drastic options needed?published at 22:37 British Summer Time 1 April 2019

    Laura Kuenssberg
    BBC political editor

The BBC's political editor says Theresa May has "not completely given up hope" of getting her deal through, but adds:

    Quote Message

Given how Parliament is trying to take control of this process - it’s absolutely very, very difficult to hear how she's going to find a resolution very soon.

    Quote Message

That's why many ministers are now privately starting to talk about more drastic options. Perhaps a general election - if they can see no other way out of this mess.
