Local elections: 'PM must look at number of Tory councillors lost'

Donna Jones, Conservative group leader in Portsmouth, says Brexit played a "huge part" in the elections - although she was pleased with the performance in Portsmouth.

Portsmouth remains in no overall control.

She said Theresa May needs to look at how many councillors the party has lost overnight.

And she added: "If she listens to the grassroots Conservative Party members - even those that voted to remain - they are now saying, enough is enough, and we want you to leave the European Union even if that means no deal."

  14. Local Tory leader: I'd ask PM to consider her positionpublished at 05:26 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

Tony Berry is the leader of the Conservative Party on the Cotswold District Council.

Tony Berry is the leader of the Conservative Party on the Cotswold District Council. Tonight, the Conservatives lost control of the council after 16 years.

He said: "I do recognise there are very, very many things in play here.

"Not just protest votes, but I think when we look into the figures we also find there's a much lower turnout than usual and of course that skews everything. It's a very unusual set of circumstances."

Asked what reasons he was picking up on the doorstep about why people weren't voting Conservative, he blamed Brexit and "professional politicians who are basically working for themselves rather than necessarily what is best for the country".

His message to Theresa May after tonight? "I would ask her to consider her position very carefully," he said.
