  20. 'Early evidence' of the Brexit effectpublished at 00:38 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    Laura Kuenssberg
    BBC political editor

In the last couple of days, privately, senior Labour and Tory politicians have been predicting a "plague on both our houses" set of results.

Everybody who works in and around Westminster, everybody who's been paying attention to politics in the last six months or so has seen how both of our main parties have really been struggling to cope with the challenge the electorate has set them.

And it's not therefore surprising if we are seeing this early evidence coming through. The parties are both split in different ways - the Tories more profoundly but Labour too struggling with how to cope with the Brexit challenge.

It may well be, as we've heard from our reporters at counts, that while people have obviously paid attention to local issues, time and again people are saying "whether you're Labour or whether you're Tory, as far as I'm concerned, you're making a mess of it."
