  1. Curtice: The end of big party domination?published at 00:37 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    Professor Sir John Curtice
    Polling expert

In 2015 Conservatives and Labour dominated the election. In these early signs so far we might be seeing that those days are over.

When I look at voting figures for Labour and the Conservatives and compare them to last year, I am looking at a lot of minus signs.

I'm looking at a lot of plus signs for the Greens.

I'm seeing UKIP clearly stronger than they were in 2016 and 2017.

And the Lib Dems are not spectacular but they have rather more pluses than minuses.

The message of the opinion polls has been that both Conservatives and Labour have been losing ground because of the Brexit impasse.

That may be confirmed by the end of the night.

  2. Barnsley Council leader: Not looking good for Labourpublished at 00:34 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

Barnsley Council leader, Labour's Steve Houghton, says: "It's not looking good.

"This is going to be a very difficult night for Labour. We've been out and about across the borough and the message we're getting loud and clear is all about Brexit and the residents are telling us they're going to make sure there's some changes because of their dissatisfaction."

  7. Liberal Democrats in with a chance in the South Hams?published at 00:22 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    Martyn Oates
    BBC South West Political Editor

There could be "serious" problems for the Conservatives in the South Hams if one senior Tory's prediction of a low turnout is true.

It could let the Liberal Democrats in with a chance on an otherwise perennially Tory South Hams District Council.

    We shall see.

  13. The news from Traffordpublished at 00:16 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    BBC News Channel

    Nina Warhurst

BBC North West political editor Nina Warhurst is in Trafford.

The council was run by the Conservatives from 2014 but is currently under no overall control, and could go to Labour tonight.

Nina says a Labour campaigner told her this is partly due to "rapid gentrification in South Manchester" and a shift in demographics to "just the sort of people who like Jeremy Corbyn".

Meanwhile, the Conservative group leader told her that just holding on to their seats would be a good night for the party.

He also said that what is happening in Westminster will be a significant factor if the Conservatives to have a bad night in Trafford.

  14. Could Basildon switch hands?published at 00:11 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

Seven ward results have declared so far in Basildon.

The Conservatives - who currently run the council - are in danger of losing it to no overall control. Turnout from wards declared so far is averaging just 23%, the Press Association says.

  17. People 'disillusioned on the doorsteps'published at 00:05 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    BBC News Channel

    Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson

Deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats Jo Swinson says: "People are absolutely disillusioned on the doorsteps with the job the government's making.

"The only thing that unites the country at the moment is everybody's view that the government is dealing with it [Brexit] badly. Doesn't matter if people were Leave or Remain, everyone can agree on that pretty much."

  18. This is going to be a really tough night for us, says ministerpublished at 00:04 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    BBC News Channel

    James Cleverly

Brexit Minister James Cleverly tries to play down expectations, arguing that after nine years in government you would expect the Conservatives to "lose lots and lots of seats".

He points to Swindon as an area where Labour should be making big gains "at this point in the electoral cycle".

"Our local councillors work hard and deliver good services," he says.

"I hope they are judged on that delivery but it would be unrealistic to pretend, that nine years in government, with Brexit as a backdrop, this isn't going to be anything other than really tough night for us."

  20. Closure of Honda plant 'big local factor' in Swindonpublished at 00:00 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    BBC News Channel

Labour's Barry Gardiner says: "Clearly I think in any local election you always get the national factor overlaying the local factor.

"The big local factor in Swindon of course is the closure of the Honda plant. That has affected everybody in the town."

Swindon is currently held by the Conservatives but is yet to declare.
