  1. Did Extinction Rebellion inspire Green surge?published at 18:54 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

The Green Party has now won 255 councillors - up 185 on 2015.

With the elections coming after weeks of protests by Extinction Rebellion, should the environmental group be seen as having had an impact on voters' decisions?

Jonathan Bartley, the Green Party's co-leader, certainly thinks so.

He told the BBC he had "no doubt" the Extinction Rebellion group had contributed towards the party's election success, adding it was a "powerful force in building awareness of the urgency of climate change".

  8. May on 'constructive talks' with Labour over Brexitpublished at 18:13 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

The prime minister has welcomed Jeremy Corbyn's comments about wanting to get a Brexit deal over the line.

Theresa May says: "It's what I've been saying for some time; it's what I've been working towards.

"And I hope all across Parliament have got a very clear message as to what the public wants; they want us to deliver Brexit."

She says the government is continuing to have "constructive talks" with Labour to find a way which commands a majority in Parliament to enable Brexit.

"We are trying to ensure that we can find an arrangement that will get a majority in Parliament, and then we can leave the European Union - and I want to do that inside the extension timetable that's been given to us by the EU.

"I want to do that as soon as possible. Of course, ideally, I've always wanted to do that before the European elections."

  10. Hunt: Gavin Williamson 'has a lot to be proud of'published at 18:05 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    HARDtalk
    BBC News programme

Former Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson was very committed to his role and to the men and women of the armed services, Jeremy Hunt tells BBC Hardtalk’s Stephen Sackur.

The foreign secretary says he respects the fact that if the prime minister believes Mr Williamson was responsible for leaking information then she can not have him sitting around the table at the National Security Council.

But he adds that Mr Williamson has “a lot to be proud of, of his record”, and hopes it will not be the last word on his career as defence secretary.

Mr Williamson has strenuously denied leaking information from the National Security Council.

  20. Analysis: Bitter flavour for Labour and Toriespublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    Laura Kuenssberg
    BBC political editor

Neither the prime minister nor the Labour leader have anywhere to hide.

After nine years in government it's not surprising that the Conservatives have lost a significant chunk of seats.

But the sheer number that have disappeared and the loss of control of authorities will hurt - especially with so many activists identifying Theresa May's handling of Brexit as a root of the problem, not just a general malaise.

The perceived personal nature of the failure is more of an indignity than an encounter with a heckler in tweeds.

And for Jeremy Corbyn, it IS surprising and disappointing that Labour has simply failed to make any significant capital from such a divided and chaotic government.

However ardently his devotees swear loyalty, the party has fallen back - on this set of results at least - seeming further rather than closer from winning power in a general election he so often claims to crave.
