Elections are held for 248 English councils, six mayors and all 11 councils in Northern Ireland
Conservatives and Labour both see vote shares fall compared with 2015

1. The seat decided by chance: A poll on Hambleton Council was decided by lot - and the result saw Labour take its first seat there in more than a decade.
2. Controversy in the Cotswolds: The Tories won the Tetbury Town ward by just one vote - after officials looked through the spoiled ballots and accepted one where the voter had put "Brexit" and an arrow to the Conservative Party candidate.
3. Jacob Rees-Mogg now lives in a Lib Dem area: The leading Brexiteer now has a Lib Dem councillor representing him in Somerset.
4. Green surge 'helped by Extinction Rebellion': Jonathan Bartley, the Green Party's co-leader, told the BBC he had "no doubt" the Extinction Rebellion group had contributed towards the party's election success.
5. Maiden success for the Yorkshire Party: The little-known party has won council seats for the first time in its history.
6. Political poetry: #Dogsatpollingstations proved such a hit on election day it has even emerged as a muse for professional poets.

Labour candidate Andy Abrahams has been elected as the new mayor of Mansfield.
He defeated incumbent Kate Allsop, from the Mansfield Independent Forum, by only two votes, after a second recount of the second preference votes.
Ms Allsop was elected in 2015 and was the second Executive Mayor of the Nottinghamshire town, following Tony Egginton's 12-year term.

Polling expert Prof Sir John Curtice says the local election results suggest a general election would not get the UK out of its current Brexit impasse.
He says "we would have Parliament even more hung than the current one” on the evidence of Thursday's results.
"The two-party system - in these elections at least - has never looked weaker."
He adds that the absence of the Brexit Party and Change UK from the local elections means it isn't necessarily representative, but having more parties fighting an election is unlikely to decrease the chances of a hung Parliament.
