    Three young Conservatives

BBC Radio 5 Live's Emma Barnett has been getting reaction from young Conservative voters at Westminster.

Lacey Butcher has just graduated from university with a degree in politics and is now working for an estate agency.

“[I am] very thrilled," she says.

"This has sent a clear message to the Conservative Party and the rest of the UK - Boris is the man who’s going to fulfill on Brexit. This is a time for unity, we need to get behind our new leader and put our greatest efforts into Brexit. The front bench needs to consist of people who truly believe in Brexit.”

Cameron Bradbury is from Norwich. He says: “It’s a double-edged sword.

"We’re losing a very capable and admirable prime minister who has always put duty before party. Boris has his own unique charms.”

Bhav Popat is a law student at the University of Warwick, and was supporting Jeremy Hunt. She says: “I’ve never been anti-Boris so I am fully behind him as a leader - I hope that he can deliver on what he said.”

Anne Milton, who resigned as education minister before the results were announced, admits Boris Johnson has won a "decisive" result today.

She says the idea of suspending Parliament to push through a no-deal Brexit, something Mr Johnson has not ruled out, is "out of the question" for her.

She says however that she would be "very reluctant" to vote against Mr Johnson's government in a vote of no confidence to stop a no-deal Brexit happening.

Liz Saville RobertsImage source, UK Parliament

Plaid Cymru's Westminster leader Liz Saville Roberts said the victory of "clown" Mr Johnson was a "gift" to the cause of Welsh independence, which she claimed was now inevitable.

"The Conservative party has just thrown the UK out of the frying pan and into the fire," she said.

"During the most serious political crisis in decades, a clown is set to become prime minister. But this is no joke.

"People will soon realise this isn't as good as it gets. By electing Boris Johnson, the Conservative Party has given the Welsh independence movement a gift.

"With the election of Mr Johnson, the question of Welsh independence is not of 'if', but 'when'."

"He will get a chance now to put together a great team.

"I'm sure he will do that, which will unite the party and get us moving forward to deliver Brexit, talk about some of those other things like broadband, like education that we need to be talking about, that the voters want to hear us talking about, and beat Jeremy Corbyn in the next election."

Asked if he would like to be in Mr Johnson's cabinet, Mr Raab added: "I am looking forward to serving whichever way he sees fit."

  15. Johnson 'not daunted' by Brexitpublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 23 July 2019

After being named the new prime minister, Boris Johnson said he wasn't daunted by the challenge of delivering Brexit.

“Today at this pivotal moment in our history we again have to reconcile two sets of instincts, two noble sets of instincts, between the deep desire of friendship and free trade and mutual support in security and defence between Britain and our European partners, and the simultaneous desire – equally deep and heartfelt – for democratic self-government in this country.

“And of course there are some people who say that they are irreconcilable and it just can’t be done. And indeed I read in my Financial Times this morning… that no incoming leader has ever faced such a daunting set of circumstances.

“Well I look at you this morning and ask: Do you look daunted?’

“I don’t think you look remotely daunted. I think we can do it and I think the people of this country are trusting in us to do it and we know that we will do it.

"And we know the mantra of the campaign that just went by - it is deliver Brexit, unite the country, and defeat Jeremy Corbyn. And that’s what we’re going to do."

  16. Sturgeon has 'profound concerns'published at 12:38 British Summer Time 23 July 2019

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon says she has "profound concerns" about Boris Johnson becoming prime minister.

"I congratulate Boris Johnson on his election as Tory leader and I will do everything possible to ensure that he respects Scotland's views and interests," she says.

"However, I have profound concerns about the prospect of his premiership and it would be hypocritical not to be frank about these.

"These are concerns that I am certain will be shared by the vast majority of people in Scotland who, had they been given any say, would not have chosen to hand the keys of Number 10 to someone with his views and track record."
