    BBC Parliament

A reminder, to succeed the prime minister needs the support of two-thirds of MPs, that is 434 MPs.

"That is not two thirds of those voting but two-thirds of the whole house," explains BBC parliamentary correspondent Mark D'Arcy.

"It is a very stiff target."

"Based on what opposition parties have said, they [the government] are not going to get there," says the Hansard Society's Ruth Fox.

He says Ireland would have to work to protect its place within the EU single market - adding that d oing this without the backstop will lead to "unpalatable decisions".

  5. Labour will back election after Brexit bill 'gains Royal Assent'published at 21:23 British Summer Time 4 September 2019

Labour's press office is reminding media that Jeremy Corbyn has said the party will back an election - but only after the Brexit delay bill gains Royal Assent.

“I repeat what I said last night, Mr Speaker: Let this Bill pass and gain Royal Assent, then we will back an election.”

However, this appears to contradict what shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer said earlier in the Commons...

And this is what Sir Bernard Jenkin is saying.

"There is fear in this House about facing the consequence of a general election," says the Conservative MP for Harwich and North Essex.

"That is because of the way this House has conducted the whole Brexit affair for the last three years.

"Putting it off again and again isn't going to make the eventual outcome of a general election any easier."

"Elections are very rarely fought on one issue alone," says Green Party MP Caroline Lucas.

"If we are to break the Brexit deadlock in Parliament then the people must lead the way,"

She urges the PM to go back to the people through a second referendum.

"That is how we resolve Brexit," she says.

"Not by proroguing and dissolving, dodging and obfuscating."

  13. Jess Phillips: Tory MPs have been too cowardlypublished at 20:53 British Summer Time 4 September 2019

    House of Commons
    Parliament

    Jess PhillipsImage source, HoC

Labour's Jess Phillips says she won't vote for an early election.

"We shouldn't go on conference recess, we shouldn't be prorogued," she says.

"The public think we are away from here too often."

The Birmingham Yardley MP says the suspension of Parliament will "kill a bill" she has been working on "for two and half years" referring to the Domestic Violence Bill.

"And I am meant to believe the prime minister is doing this because he has a vision of the people in the country?

"He has a vision that comes to him every night and it his own face."

She also attacks Conservative MPs for being "too cowardly" to defend their colleagues who were expelled from the parliamentary party.

Labour MP Stephen Kinnock's amendment - which stated the reason for the extension should be to allow MPs to vote on a version of Theresa May's deal from May that was never put to the vote - was passed, seemingly by mistake after the government's teller failed to appear for the count.

  16. Only one reason to oppose motion - Tory MPpublished at 20:41 British Summer Time 4 September 2019

    House of Commons
    Parliament

"There is only one purpose in denying this motion," says Conservative Desmond Swayne.

"And that is to ensure that the British people have no say whatever over what takes place at the EU Council on 19 October."

  17. Date of proposed election shiftedpublished at 20:39 British Summer Time 4 September 2019

Originally, the date mooted by No 10 for an election was Monday 14 October, but that's now shifted to a day later, Tuesday 15th.

We're not party to private discussions in Downing Street on the shift, but there was certainly unhappiness that religiously observant Jews might have been unable to go to a polling station to vote on 14 October. The date clashes with the first day of Succot, a Jewish religious festival, and observant Jews cannot vote on this day because activities associated with work - including writing - are prohibited.

As another aside, elections are conventionally on a Thursday so either date is something of a break from tradition.

    Jo SwinsonImage source, HoC

"We can have a general election," says Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson.

However, she adds that "such an election should be held in calm and orderly way not with the threat of crashing out with no deal during the campaign.

"So if he wants a general election, extend Article 50 and bring it on."
