  2. What has just happened - and what happens next?published at 15:18 British Summer Time 19 October 2019

What's just happened in the Commons with the Letwin amendment?

So just to recap it means that what MPs have passed is something like: this House has considered the matter, i.e. the deal, and withholds its approval until the legislation - the bill, which enacts the withdrawal agreement - goes through.

Now those who voted for it say it stops the possibility of somehow the prime minister, and people in the Conservative Party maybe, trying to get a no-deal Brexit at the end of October.

There are others though who are saying, look they're just simply trying, yet again, to block Brexit completely.

    And what happens next?

What this means is that by law the prime minister has to ask the EU for another delay to Brexit.

It's called the Benn Act - that kicks in at 11 o'clock tonight.

But interestingly Boris Johnson, as he's said all along, is suggesting he's just not going to do it: "I will not negotiate a delay, nor does the law force me to."

There's been so much speculation about how he could somehow get round this law. No-one really thinks he can but there's been talk of whether he sends one letter and then another saying, "look I don't really want this".
