First elected as the MP for Banbury in 2015, Prentis has previously held a couple of junior minister roles.

Under Boris Johnson, she was minister for farming, fisheries and food - and in September she was appointed minister for work and welfare at the Department for Work and Pensions by Liz Truss.

  5. Sunak expected to call Sturgeon tonightpublished at 19:23 British Summer Time 25 October 2022

    Philip Sim
    BBC Scotland political correspondent

Rishi Sunak is expected to speak to Nicola Sturgeon later tonight, in a bid to reset relations with the Scottish first minister.

Liz Truss famously said she would “ignore” Sturgeon, and in the end it was one of the few policies she was able to follow through on – the two never had a formal meeting or even a phone call.

This was widely seen as a blunder by Scottish Tories, and Sunak is keen to set a different tone from day one.

That said, don’t expect relations to be much warmer. Sunak has written off Sturgeon’s plans for an independence referendum as “barmy”, and said during the summer leadership race that he intends to “take her on and beat her”.

There will be some familiar faces for Scottish ministers to work with, too – Alister Jack is returning to the post of Scottish Secretary, while Michael Gove makes a comeback as minister for intergovernmental relations.

Sunak is keen to have his ministers appear north of the border more regularly, and Gove is likely to be first in line to head to Holyrood to meet with MSPs.

Health secretary well aware of NHS challengespublished at 19:11 British Summer Time 25 October 2022

New health secretary Steve Barclay is well aware of the challenges facing the NHS.

He unveiled plans to help the health service through winter during his two-month stint as health secretary during the summer.

Prior to that he worked as a health minister during much of 2018.

But, he is also known as someone who shares the new prime minister’s desire to tackle perceived inefficiencies in the NHS.

For example, during the summer he was quick to highlight how a small group of hospitals were responsible for disproportionate amount of handover delays that led to queues of ambulances outside A&Es.

I am told in a series of meetings with the CEOs of these hospitals he let it be known they would be held accountable for what he considered to be below-par performance.

There will be stick as well as carrot under his watch it seems.

Lord True CBE has been re-appointed Lord Privy Seal, and leader of the House of Lords, Downing Street has announced.

His roles make him responsible for the organisation of government business in the House, and providing assistance to all Lords and offering advice on procedure.

Lord True was appointed to the roles in September as part of Liz Truss's cabinet reshuffle when she became PM.

He previously served as minister of state at the Cabinet Office from February 2020 to September 2022.

Before becoming a minister, he was leader of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames from 2010 to 2017.

He was private secretary to the opposition chief whip in the House of Lords from 1997 to 2010 and deputy head of the prime minister’s policy unit for Sir John Major from 1990 to 1994.

He was made a life peer in December 2010 and chaired the Select Committee on Intergenerational Fairness. He was appointed a CBE in 1993.

Davies has been the MP for Monmouth since 2005 and previously served as an assembly member from 1999 to 2007.

He was appointed as a junior minister in the Wales Office under Boris Johnson in 2019.

Davies kept his job during Liz Truss's reshuffle and he now succeeds Sir Robert Buckland who resigned earlier today.

Rishi Sunak speaks after being appointed PMImage source, PA Media

For the second time this autumn, a day with two prime ministers. Moments of high constitutional convention; audiences with the King.

Moments of introductory and valedictory rhetoric and a moment that encapsulated political failure: a removal van in Downing Street.

The new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's address was most striking for its tone: business like, sombre, humble and yet confident.

We are experiencing an "economic crisis" he said, his predecessor made mistakes, there was no case for a general election and difficult decisions lay ahead.

Liz Truss, earlier, had brought defiance, not apology to the lectern; never before in Downing Street have those imposters triumph and disaster shared the same season.

Sunak is now moulding his government; the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and Foreign Secretary James Cleverly remain; Boris Johnson's Deputy Dominic Raab returns as Sunak's number two.

The most eye catching appointment is Suella Braverman. She resigned as home secretary last Wednesday; Truss saying she broke the Ministerial Code.

Six days later, she is back... as home secretary.

The new prime minister inherits a daunting cocktail of economic and political turmoil.

Even with the backing of his party, which isn't guaranteed, Rishi Sunak's challenge is colossal.

    Breaking

Alister Jack MPImage source, PA Media

Another member of the Liz Truss government who is keeping his Cabinet role is Alister Jack who remains secretary of state for Scotland.

The MP for Dumfries and Galloway took over the job in 2019 after his predecessor David Mundell was sacked by Boris Johnson.

Jack was previously one of Johnson's big supporters.

A former government whip, he was first elected in the 2017 snap election but also runs a large dairy farm near his home in Dumfries.

  11. Heaton-Harris stays on as NI secretary of statepublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 25 October 2022
    Breaking

Chris Heaton-Harris has been re-appointed as secretary of state for Northern Ireland, Downing Street confirms.

Heaton-Harris has been the MP for Daventry since May 2010.

He was appointed as Northern Ireland Secretary on 6 September under Liz Truss.

The staunch Brexiteer has repeatedly said he will call an election if the Stormont executive is not fully restored by Friday.

Heaton-Harris also last week publicly backed Boris Johnson to return to Downing Street as prime minister before switching to supporting Sunak.

The last few major cabinet roles are being confirmed - and Michelle Donelan keeps her job as secretary of state for culture, media and sport.

The Chippenham MP was appointed culture secretary under Liz Truss, replacing Nadine Dorries.

Previously responsible for party discipline as government whip, Donelan worked in the media and entertainment industry before entering parliament, including a period as communications manager at professional wrestling firm WWE.

    Breaking

    Kemi BadenochImage source, Reuters

Kemi Badenoch, who rose to prominence during this summer's leadership contest, has been re-appointed as international trade secretary.

Rishi Sunak has also appointed her as women and equalities minister - a post she held previously during Boris Johnson's premiership.

Badenoch, MP for Saffron Walden, came fourth in the Tory leadership contest this summer.

She has been outspoken on issues such as gender-neutral toilets - which she opposes - and stood on an "anti-woke" platform in the Tory contest. She also argued that the state needed to be slimmed down.

  14. Michael Gove back in governmentpublished at 18:06 British Summer Time 25 October 2022
    Breaking

    Michael GoveImage source, EPA

Michael Gove has just been confirmed as the levelling up secretary.

Levelling up is a term used to described plans to close the gap between rich and poor parts of the country.

Gove has been an MP for Surrey Heath for almost 20 years.

The 55-year-old is an experienced cabinet minister and has held a number of prominent roles in government, including education secretary, justice secretary and - most recently - levelling up secretary under Boris Johnson.

However, he was sacked from that role in July, after urging Johnson to resign as prime minister.

After his dismissal he said did not expect to return to frontbench politics.

He then backed Rishi Sunak during the summer edition of the Tory Party leadership and at the time, he said Liz Truss's tax policies were a "holiday from reality".

Gove remained a critic of Truss even after she became PM; in early October, he suggested he would not vote for her mini-budget when it came to Parliament, saying "I don't believe it's right."

  15. Johnson might not be back but his cabinet is - Labourpublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 25 October 2022

    Sam Hancock
    BBC News Live reporter

We've got our first Labour reaction to Rishi Sunak's cabinet reshuffle, with Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Jonathan Ashworth saying "Boris Johnson might not be back but many of his cabinet are".

He says "these are the old faces of Johnson's cabinet" and blames many of them for helping "give us the economic issues we're grappling with" - including rising energy bills.

Of those Sunak has appointed so far, the following were also in Johnson's cabinet:

    • Dominic Raab
    • James Cleverly
    • Ben Wallace
    • Oliver Dowden
    • Grant Shapps
    • Gillian Keegan
    • Therese Coffey
    • Steve Barclay
    • Michael Gove

There are some new faces though, such as returning Home Secretary Suella Braverman, first appointed by Liz Truss.

The Tories have caused "immense damage", Ashworth tells the BBC, before repeating the party's call for a general election.

On the new PM, he says the blame for the country's financial woes isn't just on Truss but Sunak too - blaming him for "the highest tax burden in 70 years" when he was chancellor.

"I don't believe Sunak has the answers to this crisis... he helped cause it," Ashworth adds.

Asked if Sunak is a more difficult challenge for Labour at a general election, Ashworth says he's more concerned about the fact the new PM avoided setting out his policies during the recent leadership contest. (That's an issue many opposition MPs have raised in recent days.)

Stride was elected as the MP for Central Devon in 2010. In 2019 he was appointed Leader of the House of Commons under Theresa May when she was prime minister.

He backed Sunak in both Tory leadership elections this year.

Yesterday, he said there were “great challenges ahead" but that Sunak was "our best chance for meeting them".

  19. Hunt 'honoured' to serve as Sunak's chancellorpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 25 October 2022

Jeremy Hunt was Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's first appointment to his new cabinet.

In a tweet, Hunt wrote: "Honoured to serve our country, and Rishi Sunak as Chancellor of the Exchequer.

"It is going to be tough.

"But protecting the vulnerable - and people's jobs, mortgages and bills - will be at the front of our minds as we work to restore stability, confidence and long-term growth."

Liz Truss appointed Keegan to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in September this year.

She was previously minister of state for care at the Department of Health and Social Care from September 2021 to September 2022.

Keegan has been the Conservative MP for Chichester since May 2017.

In October 2020, Keegan voted against extending free school meals through the holidays, during the pandemic.

She endorsed Rishi Sunak in the Tory leadership contest this year.
