It reverses his predecessor Liz Truss's decision to lift the ban in areas where there was local consent
The controversial technique for recovering gas and oil from shale rock was halted in 2019 after concerns about earth tremors
It follows Sunak's first Prime Minister's Questions as PM, where he was grilled by Labour Leader Keir Starmer and other MPs
Starmer accused him of making a "grubby deal" to reappoint Suella Braverman as home secretary just six days after she resigned over data breaches
Sunak responded that Braverman "made an error of judgment", has apologised, and he's delighted to have her back in cabinet
Earlier the government said it would delay announcing its plan to repair the UK's finances from Monday 31 October to 17 November

She resigned from Liz Truss's cabinet last week after sending an official document to a parliamentary colleague using her personal email.
In her resignation letter, Braverman took a swipe at the government by accusing it of breaking "key pledges" and failing to reduce immigration numbers.

It means he returns to the roles he had under former PM Boris Johnson.
During the summer's Tory leadership contest, Raab was among the few Sunak-backers who carried on talking him up even when Truss’ victory was all but certain.
Last week, he pledged his support for Sunak after saying that he couldn't back Johnson as prime minister while the Partygate inquiry continued.
Raab is a staunch Brexiteer, and was Brexit secretary in July 2018 - quitting only months later in opposition to Theresa May’s Brexit deal.

Dominic Raab, Oliver Dowden, James Cleverly and Nadhim Zahawi are all in No 10.
The first two are key allies of Rishi Sunak. They stood by him throughout his last leadership campaign.
James Cleverly is currently Foreign Secretary. He’s been close to Boris Johnson over the years, and backed him when he flirted with a comeback over the weekend. He backed Liz Truss in the last leadership contest.
Nadhim Zahawi was another supporter of Boris Johnson, and served under Liz Truss.
If all of these MPs get top jobs, that would show the Prime Minister is trying to unite various elements of the Tory Party. He’s promised that will be one of his key aims.

They’re telling journalists they don’t know anything concrete and will probably hear it first on Twitter.
One former minister told me his wife was updating him based on what she was reading on websites.
Several are speculating that former Welsh Secretary Simon Hart is the new Chief Whip. That would be one of the first appointments made by a new PM because it’s a crucial role overseeing personnel and discipline.
We understand he was in the room when the PM was sacking cabinet ministers.

Jeremy Hunt will remain in his post as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has confirmed.
Hunt was appointed chancellor by former prime minister Liz Truss 11 days ago, after turmoil in the financial markets following the mini-budget and its platform of unfunded tax cuts.
Hunt - who replaced Kwasi Kwarteng - junked nearly all of Truss’s tax cuts and is credited with having restored some confidence in the markets. As a result, he had been expected to stay on as chancellor by many pundits.
Hunt was first elected to parliament in 2005 and joined the cabinet under PM David Cameron as secretary of state for culture.
He went on to become health secretary from 2012 to 2018 - where he faced criticism from junior doctors over plans to introduce new contracts, though he also secured a funding increase for the NHS.
Hunt became foreign secretary in 2018, leaving the role the following year.
He has twice stood unsuccessfully for the party leadership - in 2019 and last summer.

Image source, ReutersAnd so it begins.The first Conservative MP to walk up Downing Street is Dominic Raab (the former Justice Secretary and Deputy PM).Mr Raab had a big smile on his face. That’s no surprise - he’s been a supporter of Rishi Sunak since he ran in the last Tory leadership contest.
His arrival at Number 10 would suggest he’s about to be rewarded with a job.
China says it hopes it can “advance relations” with the UK after Rishi Sunak’s appointment as prime minister.
Speaking in Beijing, a spokesman for the foreign ministry said that he hoped China and the UK could work together on a “basis of mutual respect and win-win co-operation”.
During the leadership campaign just a few months ago – which he lost to Liz Truss before replacing her this morning – Sunak said that, if selected, he would take a hard-line stance on China.
He also set out a five-point plan to “face down” China and the Chinese Communist Party, which Sunak described as the “largest threat to Britain and the world’s security”.
China’s foreign ministry spokesman said this had been “noted”.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has congratulated Rishi Sunak on becoming prime minister.
But she added that the EU-UK relationship must be in “full respect of our agreements” - likely in part a reference to the ongoing dispute on the Northern Ireland Protocol.
The European Commission and UK government restarted talks on how to fix the post Brexit treaty this autumn, during Liz Truss’s brief premiership.
Discussions are ongoing.

He'll negotiate on behalf of the UK at Cop27 in Egypt but will no longer be a minister or attend cabinet.
Cop26 - last year's annual UN Climate Change Conference - was the 26th summit of its kind and was held in Glasgow, Scotland. The next will take place in November of this year in Sharm El Sheikh.
Sharma had been serving as the UK's business secretary when then Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked him to become the Cop26 president. He was later replaced in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy by the future chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng.
The main goal of Cop26 was for the nearly 200 countries present to keep alive the hope of limiting the rise in global temperatures to 1.5C. Sharma was praised for forging the Glasgow Climate Pact, external, which the government claimed did just that.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also congratulated Rishi Sunak.
Zelensky, who forged a close relationship with former PM Boris Johnson, says he is ready to continue strengthening the partnership between Ukraine and the UK.
The UK has pledged billions of pounds in military aid to Ukraine, as it fights against Russia's invasion.

US President Joe Biden tweeted: "Together, I look forward to enhancing our co-operation on issues critical to global security and prosperity, including continuing our strong support for Ukraine."
Canadian PM Justin Trudeau also sent well wishes, and described Canada's partnership with the UK as “one of the strongest relationships between any two countries in the world”.
He said he looks forward to working with Sunak to address ongoing global concerns, including Russia’s war on Ukraine, economic uncertainty, and climate change.

It looks like the main sackings are now finished, here come the appointments (which may also include some job swaps/demotions).
We reported earlier that Kit Malthouse was leaving his role as Education Secretary - according to sources he was offered a demotion and refused it.
Now, Malthouse has confirmed his departure and praised those he worked with in the Department for Education.

The leader of the opposition tweeted, external: "Congratulations, Rishi Sunak, on becoming prime minister and making history as the first British Asian PM.
"The Tories have crashed the economy, with low wages, high prices and a cost of living crisis."
In a readout of a shadow cabinet meeting, Starmer said Sunak "has only ever fought one leadership election battle his entire life and 'got thrashed' by Liz Truss.
"And no wonder he doesn't want to fight a general election."
Simon Clarke has resigned as Levelling-Up Secretary.
He tweeted, external: "It has been a great privilege to serve as Secretary of State for [the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities], working alongside some terrific people to level up our communities, just as it was before that as Chief Secretary of HM Treasury.
"It has only been while holding these positions that I’ve come to appreciate the full weight of responsibility that ministers bear, and we are deeply fortunate to be supported in this by our civil servants and special advisers (and never forget them on days like today)."

"He's going to run No 10 Downing Street like a chief executive would run his own office," Merriman tells the BBC's World at One programme.
"I think that will just bring an air of calm and solidity. So, in that sense... we don't want any excitement. We don't want any more turbulence."
Sunak will focus on policies to fix the economy, Merriman says, adding that "there won't be these sort of large issues that blow up under him, because he's a very calm and measured person".
Ranil Jayawardena has resigned from his role as environment secretary, in the latest change to the cabinet.
He was appointed by Liz Truss after she became prime minister.
Jayawardena tweeted , externalhis resignation letter to the prime minister, in which he said it was a privilege to serve in the role and he would continue to work hard for his constituents in North East Hampshire
