  1. 'Not many people' expected this resultpublished at 20:06 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2019

    BBC News Channel

BBC political correspondent Vicki Young says that "not many people" expected that this would be the result of the votes this evening.

"She has ordered her MPs and ministers to vote against something, and they have voted for it," she adds.

"This will just enrage Brexiteers in the Tory party," and this will "not help with the cohesion of the Conservative Party".

SNP's Westminster Leader Ian Blackford says: "We are in a constitutional crisis.

"What we see from the prime minister is a denial of the facts... her deal is dead."

Mr Blackford says he is "delighted" that the House has expressed that under no circumstances it wants a no-deal Brexit.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says MPs have ruled-out both a no-deal Brexit and the prime minister's deal.

He says extending Article 50 is now inevitable.

"Let us find a solution to deal with the crisis facing this country and the deep concerns it faces," he says.

  4. May: 'We could damage trust of public'published at 20:00 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2019

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Mrs May says the government could continue negotiations or have a second referendum, but this would damage the trust between the British public and the House.

The EU has been clear that the deal on the table is the only one available, the PM adds.

The prime minister says Andrea Leadsom will make an emergency business statement shortly, which will include a motion on a short-limited technical extension to Article 50.

"Such a short technical extension is only likely to be on offer if a deal is in place," she adds.

  5. May: 'Face up to consequences'published at 19:59 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2019

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Mrs May says the House has to understand and accept that if it is not willing to accept a deal in the coming days, and not willing to accept no deal, then it has been suggested that there will have to be a much longer extension to Article 50.

She says this would require UK to hold European elections in May 2019.

"I do not think that would be the right outcome," she says: "The House needs to face up to the consequences of the decisions it has taken."

    Point of Order

Theresa May says MPs have provided a clear majority against leaving without a deal.

The legal default in EU law remains that the UK will leave without a deal unless something else is agreed, she says, noting the responsibility on everyone in the House is now to work out what that is.

  9. 'Lots of rumours' of resignationspublished at 19:51 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2019

    BBC News Channel

The BBC's political correspondent, Vicki Young, says that there are "lots of rumours" that ministers and even Cabinet ministers may well be resigning from government over their votes this evening.

Former leader of UKIP Nigel Farage says that he accepts that the UK may no longer be leaving the EU on 29 March.

He says that the prime minister and Parliament do not have the "will to see it through".

He adds that the withdrawal agreement tabled was a "far worse situation" than being members of the EU.

"In the end, we are going to get Brexit, because the genie is out of the bottle," he says.

  17. MPs vote on May's no-deal Brexit motionpublished at 19:44 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2019

    No-deal Brexit debate

    House of Commons
    Parliament

MPs are now voting on the government's amended no-deal Brexit motion.

The original motion said the that the UK would not leave the EU without a deal on the 29 March, meaning the UK could leave the EU in a no-deal scenario at a later date.

However, after the government defeat on the Spelman amendment, which called for no-deal to be removed as the default option if a deal does not achieve a consensus among MPs, the motion now states that MPs would not leave the EU without a deal.

Of course, this is simply an expression of the will of MPs, and not a binding decision.

The vote is expected in around 15 minutes.

    Jacob Rees-Mogg

Conservative Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg says that "we are ruled by law" and not through "arbitrary motion".

He says that the law is still in place to make the UK leave the EU on the 29 March.

A motion "cannot override" the law which is already in place, he says.
