    BBC News Channel

She says that the EU states unless MPs rally round a plan, then no-deal will happen by default.

"The EU is saying 'please, be realistic'," she says.

"It is still not clear" if there is one particular plan for Brexit that MPs would vote for.

  13. MPs vote on 'Malthouse Compromise' amendmentpublished at 19:22 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2019

    No-deal Brexit debate

    House of Commons
    Parliament

With the government defeated on the Spelman/Dromey amendment by four votes, Conservative MP Damian Green now stands to move his amendment (f).

This amendment (f), referred to as the "Malthouse Compromise", sets out the process for a "managed no-deal". It requests:

    • The government publishes tariff schedules
    • An extension of leaving to 22 May 2019
    • "Mutual standstill agreements" between the UK and EU until the end of 2021, including payments to the EU
    • A unilateral guarantee of citizens' rights

MPs are now voting on this amendment, with a result expected in around 15 minutes.

  16. 'Every chance' deal could come back for a third votepublished at 19:16 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2019

    BBC News Channel

Former Labour adviser Ayesha Hazarika says "there's every chance" that Theresa May could bring back her deal for a third vote.

"I think we're in very very tricky territory" she says, because either the PM chooses a deal which is closer to the EU, or she calls a general election or referendum.

George Parker, political editor of the Financial Times, says that Mrs May might agree to a series of indicative votes on what Brexit should look like.

  18. MPs voting on 'what they do not want to do'published at 19:11 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2019

    BBC News Channel

BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg says MPs are voting on "what they do not want to do".

She says the "idea is" that MPs will express a "strong view" that they do not want to leave the EU without a deal.

"It's not binding, it's not a concrete guarantee," she says. They are expressing their will, she adds, "but that doesn't change the law".

The BBC's Europe editor, Katya Adler, says "hearts really are hardening" in Europe, but the Commission is more positive about an extension to Article 50 than the individual member states themselves.

She says that the way out of the impasse must come from the UK, the EU is saying. There is also concern that Brexit could "overshadow" upcoming European elections.

All 27 EU countries have to agree to an extension, she adds.
