  6. Umunna's talks with Lidington 'constructive'published at 16:39 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2019

The Independent Group spokesman Chuka Umunna says he has held "constructive" talks in the Cabinet Office, with minister David Lidington.

He says he put the need for a change in approach and tone, particularly on the part of the prime minister, "very forcefully".

"I think there has been an acknowledgement of the fury with which the tone, never mind the substance, of the prime minister's remarks was greeted yesterday."

He says he got the impression that the government accepts that if there is no majority for Mrs May's deal then they will have to "look at some form of process where the Commons can reach a majority view".

"On that front I think we are encouraged but if you look at the form of the government over the last few months of kicking the can down the road and dodging decisions, until we actually see them do what they may do, we'll reserve judgement," he adds.

  8. 'PM must take responsibility for the mess we are in'published at 16:35 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2019

    BBC News Channel

The TUC's general secretary Frances O'Grady says the TUC and CBI are telling the prime minister her deal is not going to go forward and she needs a plan B.

Earlier today, the organisations wrote a joint letter to Theresa May asking to meet her to discuss "a way forwards that can command a majority in the House".

"Nobody wants no deal so she needs to focus on allowing a process like indicative votes to come up with an alternative," Ms O'Grady adds.

It is time the prime minister started listening, she says, insisting workers and businesses must come first.

"The prime minister must take responsibility for the mess that we are in," she says, "it is clear we need more time."

There are an awful lot of small and medium-sized businesses that are not ready for Brexit, Ms O'Grady says.

"Simply tacking on to the ERG won't reach the numbers needed," she concludes.

  9. MPs moving against withdrawal agreementpublished at 16:32 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2019

    BBC News Channel

The fact Theresa May's deal will no longer be implemented by the March 29 is causing some MPs to move away from backing it, according to chief political correspondent Vicki Young.

She adds that it remains unclear what May's next steps will be if it doesn't pass.

  13. Less than 200 hours to go until Brexitpublished at 16:20 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2019

    @Brexitcountdow1 tweets...

There are now less than 200 hours to go until the UK legally leaves the EU - unless an extension of Article 50 is agreed to.

At the EU summit this afternoon, Theresa May will try to persuade the other 27 countries to delay the UK's exit beyond 29 March.

At the meeting, Mrs May will make a short speech to the EU 27 leaders, before she has to leave the room while they decide whether to grant the UK's request and discuss other Brexit options.

If the EU fails to grant the UK an extension, the default scenario by law is that the UK will leave the EU without a deal at 23:00 GMT on 29 March.

The prime minister has had bilateral meetings in Brussels with the Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and the European Council President Donald Tusk.

The planned meeting with President Macron of France didn’t happen because of timing issues around when each of them arrived.

Theresa May is now in a meeting with the 27 EU leaders where the group are discussing the UK's wish to extend Article 50.

Theresa May is expected to make a statement after the meeting later this evening.

MPs have been told to consider travelling by taxi or with colleagues in the coming days because of security fears.

Deputy speaker Lindsay Hoyle has written to all MPs ahead of potentially crunch Brexit votes next week, saying: “I have never felt this level of tension during my time in the House and I am aware other colleagues feel the same.”

He said regional police forces had been contacted to ensure they were aware of tensions both at Westminster and locally.

He added that the Metropolitan Police had been told to take a lead to ensure MPs could vote without fear.
