  9. 'Most shameful surrender by British leader since 1942'published at 16:40 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2019

    Brexit statement

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Conservative MP Crispin Blunt says the PM has taken a no-deal Brexit off the table, having "listened to a remainer Parliament".

He suggests her statement "will represent the most shameful surrender by a British leader since Singapore in 1942", a remark greeted with consternation by some on the Conservative benches.

The fall of Singapore to Japanese forces during World War Two was described by the then prime minister Winston Churchill as the "worst disaster" in British military history.

Theresa May says the reality is MPs have shown their intention to do everything they can to take no-deal off the table able and that "we all need to realise that if we are going to deliver Brexit."

Tory Brexiteer Mark Francois accuses the chancellor of "effectively opening the door" to a second referendum with comments he made to Sky's Sophy Ridge on Sunday show.

Philip Hammond suggested the idea of another referendum was a "coherent proposition and deserves to be considered, along with the other proposals".

In response to the question, Theresa May said her chancellor was simply saying another referendum was "one of the propositions that has been put forward".

She makes clear that she has not changed her view that the result of the 2016 vote should be honoured.
