    It follows the closure of 17 schools in Edinburgh after issues were raised about the quality of the construction work at sites including Oxgangs Primary School.

    The Scottish government has contacted every local authority asking them to ensure their own estate is in order.

    Members of Shetland Island Council's Education and Families Committee were told this morning that extensive surveys already take place locally, and no additional checks would be required.

    Amy,16 - who is a pupil at Firhill High School in Glasgow - told BBC Scotland: "It's quite disruptive because we need to finish the coursework and we need to do unit assessments, and they were meant to be happening this week but now they'll have to be done later.

    "The school has been open for 10 years, the part of the building that was built, and it hasn't fallen down yet. There's no storm just now so it won't. Nothing's going to happen."

  5. ‘Urgent inspections’ due to take place on Miller Construction schools in Inverclydepublished at 12:16 British Summer Time 11 April 2016

    An Inverclyde Council spokesman said; “We have four schools built by Miller under the PPP scheme where the provider is fully responsible for the design, build and maintenance of the school properties.

    "We also have another school which was refurbished by Miller and which is directly managed by Inverclyde Council. We have instructed physical on-site inspections of the refurbished school which is managed by the Council.

    "Following dialogue with the PPP provider for the other four schools, arrangements are being finalised for them to carry out urgent inspections on those schools. 

    "While the early indications have been that the situation in Edinburgh is not expected to exist in our schools, we are clear that we require assurances through inspections that this is the case.  Fortunately, our schools are currently closed for Spring break and don’t re-open until Tuesday."

    Thousands of Edinburgh pupils have been unable to return to classrooms after the closure of 17 schools in the city.

    A GCC Council spokeswoman said: “Our PPP contractor 3Ed carried out surveys following the issues raised by Edinburgh Schools Partnership with their buildings.

    “We do not have the reports in writing from 3Ed but they have reassured us verbally that nothing has been found which would cause us concerns or make us feel that we should be closing our schools.

    “In light of the most recent news they have taken the decision to undertake more surveys next week.

    “Our schools will open as normal on Monday 18th April following the Easter holiday.”

    Shelagh McLean, head of Education & Children's Services at Fife Council, said: "Following the most recent information to emerge from Edinburgh on Friday afternoon, Fife Council has contacted both of our PPP contractors again to carry out further inspections in Fife.

    "Thorough inspections undertaken during the holiday period had raised no structural issues with our buildings.

    “All schools in Fife will open as expected on Monday morning.”

    Parents have been reacting to fears over safety which have forced the closure of 17 Edinburgh schools - leaving 7,000 pupils unable to return to classrooms following the Easter break.

    Lindsay Cairns' daughter is in primary one at Oxgangs Primary School.

    She said: "I don't know if I'm going to have to have time off next week to look after her.

    "I've spoken to my manager. We have to wait and see what the council are going to come back with.

    "I'd like to think there's going to be an update and a contingency plan put in place but to me I'd rather have had that contingency plan before now."

    Rachel Bhandari's son is nine years old and has cerebral palsy. His special school is closed until further notice.

    She and her husband have spent the weekend trying to organise childcare as they both work.

    Ms Bhandari said: "It presents us with a really big difficulty really. We were expecting the school to be open.

    "We were told earlier in the week that it was going to be open and then just to find out on Friday that it's not is a nightmare."

  9. Investigations continue into the sinking of a fishing boat off Mingulay in the Western Islespublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 11 April 2016

    One of the four crew of the Louisa was rescued by a lifeboat in the early hours of Saturday morning after swimming for shore and then clinging to rocks.

    The Marine Accident Investigation Branch's examination of the incident is ongoing, while further searches for the missing man are under review.

    The boat was understood to have taken on water, forcing the crew to abandon ship.

  10. Police investigate after a body is found in the River Clydepublished at 11:28 British Summer Time 11 April 2016

    The Millenium Bridge, near the Science Centre at Pacific Quay, Glasgow, was closed on Sunday afternoon as a boat appeared to be searching the area.

    Police have said inquiries are ongoing after a body was recovered.

    Domestic traffic was down 19% while international traffic dipped by almost 2%, compared to the same period last year.

    Meanwhile, Edinburgh and Glasgow Airports enjoyed further record months. There was a 17% rise in traffic through Edinburgh in March, and a 9% increase in passengers passing through Glasgow Airport.

    Jason Chung Wai-Ho, whose body was found on Rum,  was last seen setting out in an inflatable red kayak from Arisaig on 13 January.

    An off-duty police officer told him not to go out because of squally weather.

    Searches were made for the 40-year-old at the time.

    Mallaig and Eyemouth lifeboats, coastguard rescue teams, a helicopter and police search dogs were involved.

  13. Body of a man found on the Isle of Rum on 25 March is confirmed as missing kayakerpublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 11 April 2016

    Police Scotland said 40-year-old Jason Chung Wai-Ho, from Glasgow, had been formally identified.

    Mr Ho was last seen on Wednesday 13 January around the area of Traigh Beach in Arisaig.

  14. Four of Orkney's North Isles are without electricity after a fault in the undersea cable from the main islandpublished at 10:40 British Summer Time 11 April 2016

    Ferries have been diverted to transport generators out to the islands, it's hoped to have them installed by lunchtime.

    More are being shipped across from the Scottish mainland later today. All the schools in the affected areas have been closed for the day.

  15. Stagecoach order fleet of 415 buses from Alexander Dennis Ltd of Falkirkpublished at 10:31 British Summer Time 11 April 2016

    The deal will take Stagecoach spending to £1bn over 10 years.

    The new vehicles will be fitted with CCTV while most will also have wi-fi installed.

    Stagecoach Group Chief Executive Martin Griffiths said: “We are investing in state-of-the-art, cleaner, greener vehicles, digital technology and smart ticketing to raise the bar and deliver an even higher standard of service. These latest vehicle orders are an important part of our strategy to encourage even more people to take the bus."

  16. Two business surveys suggest the recent downturn in the Scottish economy may be intensifyingpublished at 10:23 British Summer Time 11 April 2016

    The Bank of Scotland's latest PMI indicated output in the private sector declined last month, while the amount of new business continued to fall.

    Purchasing managers reported "harsher business conditions" in March.

    Meanwhile, a survey by business advisers BDO suggested the slowing services sector was "knocking the confidence" of Scottish firms.

    It indicated that business optimism had hit its lowest level in more than two years.

    The reports follow official figures released last week that showed growth in the Scottish economy all but stalled in the last quarter of 2015.

  17. Glasgow Airport continues record increase in passenger numberspublished at 10:16 British Summer Time 11 April 2016

    Glasgow Airport recorded its busiest March on record after more than 660,000 passengers travelled through its doors during the month, representing an increase of 9% on the same period last year.

    The airport also created history after it exceeded 8.9m passengers during a rolling 12-month period for the first time ever.

    International traffic grew by 11% due to strong demand on European routes to Berlin, Dusseldorf and Bucharest, while domestic traffic increased by 7.2%.

    Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: “Our performance during the first quarter of 2016 has ensured we’ve made what is our busiest ever start to a year. 

    “We have also continued to strengthen our route network, particularly our links with major European cities, and the addition of one of the world’s major flag carriers, Air France, was a significant achievement."

    The present surface was described as "dangerous" by Peterhead boss Jim McInally after his side's 4-0 Petrofac Training Cup final loss to Rangers on Sunday.

    New turf will be put down before this weekend's two semi-finals, but Warburton fears it will not have time to bed in before the weekend Scottish Cup semi-finals. 

    "You've got to question how a new pitch can bed down in such a short time," said Warburton.

    "My concern is if we have any adverse weather on the Thursday and Friday then have Hibs and Dundee United playing on it on Saturday before we play Celtic on Sunday.

    "I'm not sure how you bed in a new pitch in three days' time.

    "I understand there's problems and you have to find a solution as swiftly as possible, but it is surprising."
