Scottish Borders Council's assistant emergency planning officer Kevin Sewell said snow in the region had been more widespread than first anticipated.

"Today has been eventful - we had a yellow weather warning which has escalated to an amber weather warning which has meant we have had to get more resources out to deal with snow on the roadways," he said.

"That has had a knock-on effect because we have had problems at school closing time with school buses and having to get children home by alternative means.

"We were not expecting it to come so far across the Borders - it was meant to be in Peeblesshire but it has come across most of the Borders."

"The information we have currently from the Met Office is that we could expect 15cm to 25cm of further snow on the higher ground and between 5cm and 10cm of snow to lower lying areas," he said.

"Indications are that the most significant snowfall will happen between 20:00 and midnight tonight."

He said a relatively "low level deployment" was in place at present but resources were on stand-by should that need to be stepped up.
