    A joint police and council statement in the Scottish Borders has said there are a "number of issues" on various routes in the region.

    “We’re working to clear these as soon as possible, however we would appeal to people to only drive if necessary," it said.

    "Further snow showers are forecast this evening, as well as low temperatures, with a risk of ice. The council’s focus is on ensuring that the primary network is kept open.

    “Anyone who does get stuck in snow, or in a queue of traffic on a route affected by snow, is asked to remain in their vehicle.”

  2. Schools update for South Lanarkshirepublished at 17:13 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2018

    All schools and nurseries in South Lanarkshire are expected to be open tomorrow, despite the amber weather warning.

    However, the council said it would continue to assess the situation and give an update on Wednesday morning.

    Bus services to and from Stornoway are cancelled after 19:00 tonight, due to the risk posed by ice, snow and freezing temperatures.

    Comhairle nan Eilean Siar says earlier bus services are expected to operate but may be subject to disruption or cancellation at short notice.

    It has advised the public to travel only if necessary.

  15. Transport minister: Prepare for difficult driving conditionspublished at 15:18 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2018

    Transport Minister Humza Yousaf has urged people to allow extra time for their journeys as the weather deteriorates in parts of Scotland this evening.

    After the Met Office upgraded its weather warning for snow, he joined Deputy First Minister John Swinney in chairing a meeting of the Scottish government resilience operation.

    Mr Yousaf warned that snowfall in parts of south west and central Scotland was likely to lead to further transport disruption.

    Winter maintenance fleets were working around the clock, he added.

    And he urged people to plan their journeys in advance and to check the most up-to-date information on the Traffic Scotland website, external or its Twitter page, external.

    He said: "There may also be an impact on other modes of transport, so if you're planning to travel by rail, ferry or plane, you should check ahead with the operator to find out if the weather conditions have affected your service."

    The amber weather warning is in place from 15:00 today until 08:00 tomorrow.

    About 8,900 school pupils in the Highlands have missed classes or been sent home early due to snow and ice.

    Dozens of nurseries, primary and secondary schools across the region did not open because of the weather. Other sites closed early.

    The situation affected 13 secondary schools, 53 primaries, two special schools and 26 nurseries.
