  7. 'Particularly difficult day' for power cutspublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 19 September 2018

    guy jefferson - scottish power

About 80,000 homes across Scotland lost electricity because of the storms and 25,000 remain without power.

Guy Jefferson from SP Energy Networks told BBC Scotland it had been a "particularly difficult day" because of the high winds, with gusts of 80mph.

"That has caused a number of tress to fall over and other wind-borne debris, such as branches, to come into the overhead power lines and cause extensive damage," he said.

"In some cases our engineers out on site can hardly stand up, let alone climb the wooden poles to effect the repairs - so that has delayed us from getting some of our customers back on."

SP Energy Network, which is responsible for electricity transmission in south and central Scotland, said the damage to power lines was from Stranraer to St Andrews.

"It's right across our patch," Mr Jefferson said.

"Dumfries and Galloway was hit very hard this morning but we are still seeing very high winds across Fife right now."

Uber Eats has said a message asking couriers to work in severe weather conditions was sent accidentally.

The firm said the message, urging more drivers to work as it is "really busy", was sent having been scheduled a week in advance.

It added it had told couriers in Scotland not to accept further deliveries if they feel unsafe.

Gusts of more than 90mph have been recorded, with strong winds causing travel disruption and power cuts across the country.

A spokesman said: "We have daily incentives in place for couriers - which are set around a week in advance - and we regularly message couriers about them.

"This morning's messages were sent by accident.

"Our local teams are monitoring current weather conditions.

"During the severe weather in March this year when there was a 'Red' weather alert across much of Scotland we closed the app in Glasgow and other cities."

The company operates by allowing users to order food from participating restaurants on their website or with an app.

Scotrail's managing director Alex Hynes said a 'minority' of trains were running across Scotland because of the storm conditions making the lines unsafe.

"There is major disruption across the Scottish network," he said.

"Storm Ali has blocked many lines and routes but we are working as fast as we can to reinstate rail services across the country.

"Network Rail engineers are working hard to clear the lines so it is safe to run trains again."
