Police Scotland is asking employers to consider providing paid leave to members of staff who volunteer as special constables to allow them to support the national effort to tackle coronavirus.

The force said it faced "unprecedented challenges" to maintain policing while managing rising levels of sickness and self-isolation.

Last month a campaign was launched to recruit more special constables, warranted officers with all the powers of regular police officers.

Existing officers are now being urged to increase their volunteering hours wherever possible.

Mr Ewing said: "I am furious at the reckless and irresponsible behaviour of some people travelling to the Highland and Islands. This has to stop now.

"Let me be crystal clear, people should not be travelling to rural and island communities full stop. They are endangering lives. Do not travel."

Mr Ewing also highlighted the "devastating impact" of panic buying and said only "essential travel" should be undertaken.

He added: "We have been in touch with CalMac and industry leaders to discuss what further measures may be required to deal with this issue.”

    Quote Message

The pub is an enclosed environment. People are going there to sit near each other, to interact with each other. There are hard surfaces, tables, counters, which are not always cleaned all of the time and so the pub is actually somewhere, where if there is somebody even with mild symptoms, that could spread.
