    Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard has written to the first minister to ask that postal staff be classed as key workers during the coronavirus crisis.

    Mr Leonard said that while postal workers in England have been designated as key workers, the system north of the border requires local authorities to draw up a list.

    And he said this could lead to anomalies between councils.

    In his letter, Mr Leonard said: “These workers are often the only people many will see or speak to on a daily basis. Similarly others in telecommunications provide critical connections as we adjust to home-working. Their role is key.”

  5. Police chief: 'We will come through this'published at 12:17 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2020

    Police Scotland Chief Constable Iain Livingstone has thanked the public for their "assistance and co-operation" after the closure of pubs, cafes, restaurants and other entertainment venues.

    He said: "Our dedicated officers and staff are working round the clock to support the magnificent work of health professionals and wider society as we work collectively to protect our fellow citizens.

    "I urge everyone to play their part in the national effort."

    Mr Livingstone stressed those breaking the law "will be dealt with appropriately" and hinted that tighter restrictions may be in the pipeline.

    He added: "We are aware of proposed legislation in relation to Covid-19 and are carefully monitoring its progress and considering what the implications for policing will be."

    The chief constable's statement concluded: "We will continue to focus on public service and, by working together, we will come through this."

    In a letter to the Scottish government, the trade body which represents the retail sector, called for staff to given key worker status.

    They said: "Grocery, food-to-go and pharmacy retailers are working round-the-clock and incredibly hard at this time to make sure the nation continues to be able to access the essential medicines, sanitising products and food they need, particularly elderly and vulnerable people.

    "It is important therefore that those workers in these sub-sectors of retail who have childcare responsibilities are able to access provision for their children so they can continue to go to work during this difficult time.”

    Aberdeenshire Council's trading standards department has issued a warning over the sale of homemade or unlabelled hand sanitisers.

    Trading Standards team manager Aled Herbert told the Evening Express, external: "The current shortage may lead to a rise in unsafe, non-compliant hand sanitisers making their way onto the market which may make claims that are not substantiated.

    "Hand sanitisers not made correctly can lead to a false sense of security and crucially may not be effective.”

    Shortages across the country have led to stores rationing supplies.

    Evictions from properties have been suspended as a result of the coronavirus pandemic by the government body that handles bankruptcies in Scotland.

    The Accountant in Bankruptcy, external (AiB) said it has also suspended sales of properties until further notice.

    The move is part of emergency measures being introduced by the Scottish government agency in response to the Covid-19 outbreak.

    Finance Secretary Kate Forbes appealed for people to stop travelling to the Highlands to self-isolate.

    The move follows concerns about members of the public travelling from other parts of the country to stay in their holiday homes or campervans.

    To date, only six of Scotland's 322 positive Covid-19 cases have been recorded in the region.

    The Scottish government is expected to publish the latest coronavirus figures online, external at 14:00.

    To date cases have been detected in 12 of the country's 14 health board areas, with the exception of NHS Western Isles and NHS Orkney.

    NHS Greater Glasgow has recorded the highest number of positive tests in Scotland with 91.
