  16. Economy needs to be put 'on pause' to save businessespublished at 09:08 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2020

The chief executive of Glasgow Chambers of Commerce, Stuart Patrick, says schemes like job retention, rates relief and VAT defferal have been welcomed by businesses already struggling to survive the coronavirus shutdown.

But he told BBC Radio's Good Morning Scotland that the "critical issue" for most firms was being able to access help quickly.

He said many businesses desperately needed an injection of cash and that a wider system which essentially put the economy "on pause" may be needed.

  17. Tourists and visitors appear to be returning homepublished at 08:58 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2020

Ms Forbes says she believes that the message about not travelling to the Highlands to self-isolate during the coronavirus outbreak is "starting to register".

There were reports at the weekend that many people with second homes or campervans were travelling to the area.

The Highlands MSP told Good Morning Scotland the decision to restrict Calmac ferries to locals only had helped the issue.

She said the advice was to "go home" if it was safe to do so.

"This is a rural area with far fewer hospitals. Enough to cater for the local population, but not if lots of people are moving into the area and getting sick," she said.

    "This is not a holiday."

  18. Banks need to 'do their bit' to help economy survivepublished at 08:48 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2020

Ms Forbes says that small businesses will now be able to apply for £10,000 grants from the Scottish governement to help them through the coronavirus crisis.

There will also be grants of up to £25,000 available to the hospitality, leisure and retail property sectors as they were "first hit and worst hit" by the outbreak.

But the finance secretary said businesses should also be looking to their banks for help.

She told BBC Scotland that banks should be "sympathetic" to requests for mortgage holidays and other financial help.

"This is about getting through the next few months, this is about ensuring that we still have an economy at the end of it," she said.

"If it's the case that banks are not sympathetic then I will most happily put pressure on them. We expect the banks to do their bit to support communities and to support businesses through the next few months."

  19. Self-employed 'need cash to feed families'published at 08:35 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2020

Scottish Finance Secretary Kate Forbes says she has made multiple appeals to the UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak to give more help to the self-employed.

She told BBC Scotland there were 330,000 self-employed workers in Scotland who were "absolutely critical to the economy" and were struggling just as much as employees.

The Scottish goverment says wage support schemes could be offered through the tax system.

"I don't think there's any question about how challenging it is to mobilise systems right now to get support out," she said.

"It is challenging, but that doesn't take away the fact that people are struggling right now and we need to make sure they have money in their pockets to pay bills, to look after their family and to feed themselves."
