Leicester's public health director has welcomed additional vaccines from the government to help tackle the Indian Covid-19 variant in the city.
Ivan Browne said the vaccination rollout in Leicester was set to be ramped up from next week.
The city was confirmed by the government as one of the areas to receive additional support to help tackle the variant of concern yesterday.
Mr Browne said there were currently between 10 and 20 cases of the Indian variant in Leicester but they had asked the government for extra vaccines to be prepared.
He said: "What we want to do is to protect the city before we get into those sorts of situations we have seen in other parts of the country.
"It is not that it's huge numbers but clearly we want to be on the front foot with any cases that come our way that require us to look in more detail and do more in-depth contract tracing."
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said "while there is no evidence to show this variant has a greater impact on severity of disease or evades the vaccine, the speed of growth is of note".
Early indications show uptake for bookings is high among the age group, the Department of Health says.
