  1. How will we know phase one of easing lockdown is progressing safely?published at 14:27 British Summer Time 28 May 2020

Tom Gordon from The Herald asks about ensuring phase one is progressing safely and whether three weeks will be sufficient to establish this.

The first minister says the government will monitor the impact of the changes on the R-number, hospital and ICU admissions, and deaths.

The incubation period would suggest if there is an impact it will be 2-3 weeks, though that three week period is a guide and does not mean we will move ahead at that point she adds.

Mr Gordon asks whether it is expected the downward trends will keep going downwards.

“I can’t give categoric answers,” replies Ms Sturgeon. She suggests a slight increase may not mean we have to go backwards and she will have to make a judgement then.

"There are no plans to change the two metre rule at the moment," says the first minister when told that Boris Johnson is considering a change in advice that will help pubs and restaurants in England re-open by the P&J.

Nicola Sturgeon stresses that her advice will only change when the scientific advice allows, adding that her government continues to examine all of the evidence.

"I think Dominic Cummings should no longer be in post," says the first minister when informed of the latest developments on the matter by The Times.

"It is a matter for the prime minister, but if he is putting the integrity and trust of the vital public health message first, then he will take action that means Dominic Cummings doesn't continue to distract from that," she says.

"It is wrong to put political interest before that public health interest.

"My views are known and every sentence I utter about Dominic Cummings is a sentence I'm not uttering about the advice I want the people of Scotland to follow."

  4. Regional variance for test & protect strategypublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 28 May 2020

The Daily Mail has a question on the average number of traces required on anyone testing positive.

"If we follow the guidance on physical distancing, then contacts should be much lower than normal," replies Nicola Sturgeon, who says the system of offering tests and protection will be modified and adjusted "when we know what people's needs are".

Health Secretary Jeane Freeman explains that local public health partnership arrangements may vary but that it will always be "quality support".

  8. Social distancing guidance for couples coming soon...published at 13:44 British Summer Time 28 May 2020

    Nicola Sturgeon

Christine Lavelle from The Sun asks when couples who have been apart can expect to get the go ahead for a more intimate connection.

The first minister acknowledges that this is "particularly difficult" and says her government is looking at the issue "specifically". She cannot provide a date at the moment, but hopes to be able to address the situation in the "not too distant future".

For now, she implores that people live as "sensibly and safely as possible".

  9. Are care home staff being moved between premises?published at 13:40 British Summer Time 28 May 2020

Vivienne Aitken from The Daily Record suggests Health Protection Scotland is giving different advice on allowing care homes to move staff between premises.

She explains eight staff were transferred from a home where there was an outbreak to one where there had not been, albeit there had not been a case at the former for 14 days and staff had tested negative.

Health Secretary Jeane Freeman says the guidance is that care homes should not mix staff in order to avoid transmission of the virus.

The case Ms Aitken mentioned indicates the provider took “appropriate mitigating measures”, Ms Freeman says.

Alan Smith from Bauer says there is concern about people flocking to beauty and tourist spots and asks how realistic it is to expect people to stick to the five-mile travel guidance.

Ms Sturgeon believe it is "very realistic" and expects the people to "do the right thing".

If people are not sticking to the guidance the government will have "no alternative" but to put it into regulation, the first minister says.

ITV Border inquires about who has responsibility for tracing when individuals are moving between Scotland and England.

"It is not a new arrangement," says the first minister, who explains that other infectious diseases have been followed in this way for "a long time".

"Information sharing, cooperation and collaboration is already the standard approach," says Nicola Sturgeon.

Health Secretary Jeane Freeman uses the example of someone testing positive in Dumfries, who has had contacts in Carlisle, saying Scottish health workers would liaise with Public Health England officials and their teams - and it would be done "quickly".

The Nike conference was held at the Hilton in Edinburgh in February

The BBC’s Sarah Smith and James Matthews from Sky both reference the Nike conference in February which resulted in the country's first coronavirus outbreak.

They site the case of Gillian Russell, who fitted kilts for delegates at the conference in Edinburgh, to question the efficacy of the government's test and trace programme.

“I trust the people that do this work for us,” replies Nicola Sturgeon, who goes on to repeat the three criteria that will involve the contacts of those testing positive to self-isolate...

    • Household members
    • Face-to-face contact
    • Within two metres for 15 minutes or more

She says these are “not rules we dream up” and they are based on a “detailed assessment of public health risk”.

The first minister also promises to publish details on the onward transmission from the Nike conference once they have been fully established.

Supermarkets and soon-to-open garden centres can sell clothes, yet clothes shops retailers must stay closed. Is this fair, asks Gordon Chree from STV.

“We are trying to be as fair as possible but our priority is trying to beat deadly virus,” says the first minister.

“We need food from the supermarkets, but it is not as essential to go shopping for clothes, when you can still shop online.”

Nicola Sturgeon explains that distinctions are being made to keep public footfall as low as possible, adding that it will gradually increase.

“The virus is still out there and we cannot forget it,” she says.

The first minister accepts how hard social distancing is: "The instinct to hug somebody you love is a really strong one, especially when you haven't seen that person for quite some time."

For couples that live apart this is even more difficult and this point is being considered very carefully she adds.

However for now: "Don't put your loved ones or yourself at risk."

  20. Nicola Sturgeon on easing strict lockdown measures: 'I do feel a bit nervous'published at 13:13 British Summer Time 28 May 2020

    Nicola Sturgeon

The first minister says: "I don't mind admitting to you that as we take these first steps I do feel a bit nervous.

    Quote Message

I worry that the limited changes we are making to these rules - the very careful changes - might lead to much greater change in reality. So I really need your help to make sure that is not the case.

    Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister

She accepts there will be lots of emotional reunions this weekend and she hopes we all enjoy them.

However she adds: "Please, please respect the parameters we are setting out."

Be respectful of each others space and remember every decision affects the safety of everyone, she adds.

"Make sure love, kindness and solidarity continue to be our guiding principles."
