  1. Briefing: Key pointspublished at 15:56 British Summer Time 31 July 2020

That's it for our live coverage of the first minister's unscheduled briefing

Here are some of the main points:

    • The first minister says: "Do not travel the affected areas in the north west of England."
    • If you are already in Greater Manchester, eastern Lancashire or West Yorkshire then when you return you are advised to minimise contact with other people for 14 days.
    • These people should not go to pubs and restaurants and not visit family elsewhere, Ms Sturgeon says
    • 30 new cases have been reported, the highest daily figure in eight weeks, though it may in part reflect a higher level of testing.
    • Half of new cases are in the 20-39 age group and the FM urges younger people to think carefully about how often they go out and mix with others.

The key theme is that the virus has not gone away and "we cannot drop our guard".

  2. 'We ignore these warnings at our peril'published at 15:48 British Summer Time 31 July 2020

    Scottish government briefing

The first minister concludes her unscheduled briefing by saying: "We are living in an unpredictable and volatile situation and we will try to communicate that as clearly as we can."

Ms Sturgeon adds: "We are surrounded by warnings that tell us that this virus has not gone away, it is still out there, it is still infectious, it is still dangerous and it is still, in many cases sadly, deadly.

"We cannot drop our guard against it. We ignore these warnings at our peril."

Ms Sturgeon is asked about the UK health secretary's handling of the restrictions on Manchester and the north west of England.

She says she will not criticise people who have to take these tough decisions.

The first minister says there are always lessons to learn and none of this is easy.

She says it is a situation where speed of response is important.

  4. Is your journey necessary?published at 15:35 British Summer Time 31 July 2020

Ms Sturgeon says she has advised against non-essential foreign travel because the situation is volatile.

She says she is not telling people not to travel to England, apart from the areas covered by the new restrictions, but she wants people to considering if any travel is necessary.

  5. 'Significant risk' from north of Englandpublished at 15:30 British Summer Time 31 July 2020

    Nicola Sturgeon

There is a significant risk of importing the virus from the north of England right now, Ms Sturgeon said.

She was asked why she did not consider quarantining people entering the country from England. She said the way people travelled from England to Scotland was different from destinations outside the UK.

Ms Sturgeon said she needed to be practical but she has always said she would take stronger action if she thought it was necessary.

Nicola Sturgeon said pubs were open and people could go to them but there was a need for all of us to think of the wisdom of doing it.

She said a person in their 20s might have gone to the pub every Friday and Saturday night. They should maybe now decide whether they want to do that as often, she said.

The first minister said that for people who had come back from England her advice would be "don't go to the pub and don't meet people indoors".

The advice to people coming back from the north of England is "be extra vigilant", Ms Sturgeon said.

She said people should minimise who they had contact with for 14 days and not go to pubs and restaurants.

Ms Sturgeon said the steps were taken in solidarity with the north of England. She said she did not want Scots travelling there making the problem worse as well as not wanting people bringing the virus back to Scotland.

Of the 30 new cases, 12 are associated with care homes, Nicola Sturgeon said.

The first minister said three were associated with the cluster in Inverclyde.

She said health teams moved quickly to find out where the infections were and break the chain.

She said she hoped this assured people that Test and Protect was working to stop the spread of the virus.

  11. 'Uptick' in the numbers of casespublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 31 July 2020

Answering a question on new cases, Ms Sturgeon said that although the percentage of people testing positive was low she thought there was an "uptick" in the numbers.

She said that taking precautionary measures such as physical distancing and hand washing was more important now than it was at the height of lockdown when people were isolating.

Prof Leitch said there was no indication of large-scale community spread yet but it is very easy for the virus to find people if they let their guard down.

  12. Concern over young people and the viruspublished at 15:03 British Summer Time 31 July 2020

    Jason Leitch

National Clinical director Jason Leitch says the numbers in England have risen and the UK government has taken appropriate steps.

He also said he was worried that young people were beginning to get more infections.

Prof Leitch said he was concerned they were "taking their foot off".

Nicola Sturgeon said there were 30 new cases of coronavirus in today's daily numbers.

This was the first time there had been this many cases in a day for almost eight weeks.

Ms Sturgeon said this showed the success in fighting the virus was fragile but she wanted to put it into context.

The last time there were 30 new cases it was from 5,000 tests. Yesterday they conducted 15,000 tests.

Today's new cases represent less than 1% of those tested and were spread over nine health board areas.

Ms Sturgeon said the virus was under control but people needed to take care.

    Nicola Sturgeon brieing

The first minister says she chaired a meeting of the Scottish government resilience committee and they have now advised against travel to the affected areas in the north of England.

She said travel to Greater Manchester, east Lancashire and parts of West Yorkshire should only be undertaken if absolutely essential.

People who have already travelled to those areas do not need to cut short their visit, she said.

When people do return home they should be even more careful than normal, she said.

They should minimise contact with people outside their own household for 14 days and avoid indoor hospitality.
