    The further easing of coronavirus restrictions in England - due to come in this weekend - has been postponed for at least two weeks, amid concerns over an increase in coronavirus cases.

    Casinos and bowling alleys will remain shut, with Boris Johnson saying it was time to "squeeze the brake pedal".

    The rethink follows new restrictions for people in parts of northern England, after a spike in virus cases.

    The latest daily Covid-19 figures for Scotland show 30 new confirmed cases.

    This was 0.8% of newly-tested individuals.

    On 31 July, no deaths were reported of people who had tested positive.

    There are currently four people in intensive care.

    People living in Greater Manchester and other parts of northern England have been told they cannot mix with other households in private homes or gardens.

    The changes, which affect millions of people in Greater Manchester, east Lancashire and parts of West Yorkshire, come after a spike in covid-19 cases.

    Many of the areas subjected to the tighter rules are among those with the highest rates of new infections in the past week.

    In Greater Manchester, the only borough to have seen cases come down substantially is Rochdale, but even then it remains one of the areas with the highest new infection rates out of more than 300 local authorities in England.

    The Scottish government said this morning that travel between Scotland and Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and parts of West Yorkshire should only be undertaken if absolutely essential.

    The affected areas are:

    • Greater Manchester: City of Manchester, Trafford, Stockport, Oldham, Bury, Wigan, Bolton, Tameside, Rochdale, Salford
    • Lancashire, Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle, Rossendale
    • West Yorkshire: Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees

    The briefing was not scheduled.

    It comes after people living in Scotland were advised to avoid travel to areas in northern England facing new lockdown restrictions amid a spike in Covid-19 cases.
