    handsImage source, ge

Alistair Grant from The Herald brings up a survey suggesting NHS staff are at "breaking point".

Nicola Sturgeon says she appreciates NHS and social care staff deserve more than words and that they deserve to see that appreciation and value reflected.

    Quote Message

Words do matter and I will never be able to find the words to properly convey my appreciation and admiration for people who worked in our health and care services over the past five months. I worked as health secretary for five years and saw up close the wonders the staff do daily and I have family members on the front line who work in the NHS. But what I have seen and been aware of over the past months has deepened that sense of appreciation and obligation to our healthcare workforce.

  5. Is it time to make face coverings mandatory in secondary schools?published at 13:36 British Summer Time 19 August 2020

    corridor

Vivienne Aitken from The Daily Record highlights a tweet showing a crowded corridor in a Scottish secondary school.

Ms Aitken asks if perhaps in school corridors, where masses of children are moving through, face coverings should be looked at.

She points out that children under 11 are getting the virus and wonders if it's time to look again at the social distancing restrictions being lifted for that age range.

Ms Sturgeon stresses there are not outbreaks in primary schools.

Rather we are seeing individual cases of primary-age children getting the virus in the community.

The first minister points out the government has never said younger children can't get the virus, but the evidence suggests the younger you are, the less likely you are to transmit it.

Where images of children not social distancing is seen, directors of education will be contacted to ensure guidance is followed and face covering guidance is continually under review, she adds.

Mr Swinney agrees and says the issue of face coverings will continue to be looked at.

  6. Chief Medical Officer: 'Scotland is not experiencing a second wave'published at 13:24 British Summer Time 19 August 2020

    Interim Clinical Director Gregor Smith

Craig Paton from the Press Association asks if rising new case numbers suggest Scotland is entering a second wave of the virus.

Nicola Sturgeon believes we are experiencing spikes and clusters as we come out of the first wave of Covid-19 and ease the lockdown.

Interim chief medical officer Gregor Smith says we need to understand why the numbers have risen. He says the evidence is that the numbers are down.

He says there is no evidence of sustained community transmission across Scotland that would signify we were entering another rapidly increasing phase.

He says we need to be vigilant and not allow that to happen and that as our contact increases with other people, it is inevitable that cases will rise.

  7. How much has Scotland's 'cautious approach' cost the economy?published at 13:21 British Summer Time 19 August 2020

Tom Martin from the Daily Express asks about today's GDP figures, which he says show the country in a deep recession and June's slight recovery lagging behind the whole of the UK.

He asks: "How much do you think you're cautious approach, for example the later reopening of shops here, has contributed to that?"

    Quote Message

Overall I don't think Scotland is in a particularly different position when it comes to the severity of the economic situation we are facing.

    Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister

Nicola Sturgeon points out the slightly different structure of the Scottish economy in terms of hospitality and tourism, which she says are a bigger proportion of the economy.

"The overall direction I hope is a strong one."
