  1. Government working with SQA to help young people catch up says FMpublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 2 September 2020

Ruth Davidson says it is “not good enough” that children will be taught less and learn less. The FM’s record in education “simply doesn’t stand the test”, she adds.

She insists alarm bells are already ringing about education this year.

Nicola Sturgeon says all of this is her daily focus, before criticising Ruth Davidson’s decision to become a peer in the House of Lords, which she describes as continuing to be a politician “without consent”.

The first minister adds a number of changes have been made to education without the need for legislation, again pointing to additional cash.

We will work with the SQA to ensure young people can catch up on their education and we will be accountable for that to the Scottish people in just a few months, she says.

  2. Davidson says Scottish Qualifications Authority planning 'less teaching, less learning, less knowledge for young people'published at 12:49 British Summer Time 2 September 2020

The Tory MSP says the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) has planned for schools to cover less ground in key subjects such as English and Maths.

“Less teaching, less learning, less knowledge for young people this year who already lost out last year,” suggests Ms Davidson.

She asks if the first minister will urge the SQA to think again.

Ms Sturgeon says the independent review will help learn all of the lessons of last year and the SQA will look closely at issues around the curriculum.

She says she takes responsibility for the mistakes made regarding this year's exam results, which is why it is important to take time to make the next decisions, she says.

  3. Call for investment to help disadvantaged young peoplepublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 2 September 2020

Ms Davidson says Scottish school pupils missed an entire term of teaching, hitting those from the most deprived backgrounds hardest.

She accepts there was no choice but to close schools in March, but says there is a choice on how to mitigate the effects of that closure.

Pointing to her party’s calls for extra tuition for disadvantaged young people, she asks if money will go to the schools and headteachers who need it most.

Ms Sturgeon says money will allow local authorities and teachers to decide the best way for students to catch up. It will help recruit teachers as we help pupils catch up, she adds.

The attainment fund puts money directly with headteachers, she says.

  4. Why is a referendum bill more urgent than an education bill?published at 12:41 British Summer Time 2 September 2020

    Ruth Davidson

Tory MSP Ruth Davidson begins her questioning of the first minister by asking why the plan for a referendum bill is more urgent than an education bill.

Nicola Sturgeon insists education remains the priority for the Scottish government, pointing to additional investment including for teacher recruitment.

Regarding a referendum, she insists is it important for the people of Scotland to have a right to choose.

She says that fundamentally she believes in democracy - and suggests Ruth Davidson does not after agreeing to enter the House of Lords.

Ms Davidson hits back that Ms Sturgeon doesn't believe in democracy when she doesn't like the answer.

Ms Sturgeon says the level of Covid was rising in these areas and that "doing nothing was not an option".

The first minister explains data suggests transmission is happening mainly in people's homes.

Restrictions on visiting other households were reintroduced in Glasgow and two neighbouring areas on Tuesday.

The first minister reiterates how Greece has been added to the list of countries with quarantine restrictions.

Quarantine restrictions will be imposed on people travelling from Greece to Scotland if they arrive in Scotland after 04:00 on Thursday.

Ms Sturgeon points out that anyone arriving from that time must self-isolate for 14 days and she calls on anyone returning from Greece before then to be particularly careful.

She repeats her advice for people to be very cautious about any foreign travel.

  10. One new death confirmed along with 156 positive casespublished at 12:29 British Summer Time 2 September 2020
    Breaking

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirms a further one person who tested positive for Covid-19 has died in the past 24 hours, taking the total to 2,495 deaths in Scotland by that measure.

This is lower than the 4,228 deaths confirmed by NRS earlier as that figure includes all cases where Covid-19 is mentioned on a death certificate, even if the patient had not been tested.

She also confirms that a further 156 people now have tested positive for Covid-19. That’s 1% of those that were newly tested yesterday.

This takes the total number of positive cases in Scotland to 20,788.

258 patients are in hospital with a confirmed case (down six), with five being treated in intensive care (down one).

  11. Glasgow area restrictions could be made into regulationspublished at 12:27 British Summer Time 2 September 2020

    FM

The first minister replies that when she announced the guidance for the Glasgow area it was specified as guidance.

Ms Sturgeon says she also added that, if it was necessary, it would be translated into regulation.

She argues the people are under no doubt about what they are being asked to do.

  12. Lib Dem MSP queries glasgow restrictionspublished at 12:25 British Summer Time 2 September 2020

Nicola Sturgeon will shortly respond to questions from Ruth Davidson, Richard Leonard, Patrick Harvie and Willie Rennie.

Expect most of the focus to be on yesterday's programme for government or the new restrictions placed on three council areas in the west of Scotland.

  14. Over 500 new cases in week ending 30 Augustpublished at 12:05 British Summer Time 2 September 2020

Two of the six new deaths were in a care home, three were in hospital and one in a home setting.

The number of positive cases remains much lower than the April peak, but has increased over the last four weeks. In the week ending 30 August there were over 500 new cases.

The NRS highlight this will be an underestimate as not everyone will display Covid symptoms and therefore may not be tested.

    Breaking

A total of 4,228 Scots deaths have been linked to Covid-19, official figures show.

The National Records of Scotland (NRS) figures indicate six people died in the week ending 30 August, the same as the previous week.

The figures are higher than the daily figure announced by Nicola Sturgeon because they include all cases where Covid-19 is mentioned on a death certificate, even if the patient had not been tested.
