    The first minister turns to people who were shielding earlier in the year and points out the steps outlined will help keep them safe.

    Ms Sturgeon calls on these people to sign up for the text alert service.

    She adds: "Fundamentally I want to assure you that your safety is uppermost in our minds."

    However the government does not believe it is right to ask this group to return to shielding.

    "We're therefore advising against car-sharing for people outside your own household," she says.

    The first minister says you can meet one other household in groups of up to six people outdoors, including in private gardens.

    She says children under 12 are exempt from the limit of six outdoors and also from the limit of two households.

    "There will be no limit on the ability of children under 12 to play together outdoors," she says.

    Young people aged 12 to 18 are exempt from the two-household limit and can meet outdoors in groups of up to six, outdoors only.

    The first minister announces "the most difficult part of today's announcement, further restrictions on household gatherings".

    • this will be reviewed every three weeks
    • this restriction is starting to slow the rise of cases in the west of Scotland where it is already in place.
    • exceptions to the new regulation include those living alone, or alone with children who form extended households
    • also exempt will be couples who have formed non-cohabiting relationships, as will be informal childcare and for trades people

    While a ban on meeting in homes is being brought in by Nicola Sturgeon, six people from two households will still be able to meet outdoors, including in a garden.

    The first minister says the government intends to exempt young people aged under 12 from both the limit of six people indoors and the limit of two households when outdoors.

    "There will be no limit on the ability of children under 12 to play together outdoors," she said.

    Young people aged 12 to 18 will be able to meet in groups of six outdoors, with no limit on the number of households they come from - but Ms Sturgeon stresses that this will be kept under review.

    The ban on meeting in homes will not affect indoor public spaces, where six people from two households can still meet.

    The first minister asks everyone today to comply with all the advice.

    She says a package of support will be introduced for those who are self-isolating.

    Ms Sturgeon says the government is working with councils to ensure when someone is asked to self-isolate they will be contacted and offered essential practical support.

    She says support grants of £500 will be introduced for those on low incomes who have to self-isolate.

    The first minister turns to the package of measures that are being strengthened :

    • Everyone who can work from home should work from home
    • If necessary a legal duty will be put on businesses to allow home working where possible
    • Media and social media campaign will stress importance of FACTS

    Here's a quick reminder of FACTS:

    • Face coverings in enclosed spaces
    • Avoid crowded places
    • Clean hands and surfaces regularly
    • Two metre distancing; and
    • Self-isolate and book a test if you have symptoms.

    The first minister says: "The measures I am announcing today are tough."

    They are not a full scale lockdown indeed they are an attempt to avoid that, she explains.

    Ms Sturgeon says until a vaccine changes the game, the virus will have an impact but that does not mean that all the new restrictions will be in place for six months.

    She hopes these new measures will be in place for a shorter period than if there was a delay in acting.

    The measures will be reviewed in three weeks .

    Households across Scotland will not be able to visit other households indoors from Wednesday.

    The measures are already in place in seven of the country’s 32 local authorities: East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow City, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire.

    Ms Sturgeon explains trade-offs have to be made and priorities decided and the most important priority is saving lives and protecting health.

    However the government is determined to keep schools open, she adds.

    The first minister also wants as many NHS services to restart as soon as possible.

    Thirdly, she stresses the need to protect people's jobs.

    "To achieve all of that we must stop the virus spiralling out of control and we can only do that if we accept restrictions in other aspects of our lives," she says.
