  1. Restrictions like those in West of Scotland for whole countrypublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 22 September 2020

The first minister says she has spoken to the prime minister and attended a Cobra meeting this morning.

Ms Sturgeon says she is pleased that all four governments committed to supressing the virus to the lowest possible level.

She explains measures to further control the virus have been agreed by the Scottish cabinet.

Measures for hospitality, similar to those in England, will be brought in, she says.

This won't be sufficient to bring the R number down, Ms Sturgeon adds.

Household interaction is a key driver of transmission, Ms Sturgeon says.

She says nationwide restrictions similar to those already in place in the West of Scotland will be introduced across the country.

The first minister warns we are now seeing an increase in cases in the older population, hospital admissions and deaths.

"We cannot and must not be complacent about Covid," she says.

Ms Sturgeon says young people who get the disease can still end up with long-term serious health conditions.

She tells the chamber action to bring Covid back under control is necessary.

  3. Average daily number of cases has risen to 285published at 14:27 British Summer Time 22 September 2020

The first minister says today's figures reflect the course the virus has taken in recent weeks.

Ms Sturgeon points out the average daily number of cases has risen to 285.

She adds there has also been an increase in the percentage of tests coming back positive, rising to 7.6% today.

The R number is possibly as high as 1.4, she says.

  6. Boris Johnson tries to balance infection and economypublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 22 September 2020

    Douglas Fraser
    Scotland business & economy editor

The task is to balance infection control with economic and social harm - suppress the virus, and there's a need to mitigate suppression of economic activity.

The prime minister's statement in the Commons today pulled back on the most drastic measures he could have taken on health, though the impact on pubs and sports could be profound. And saying that the measures look likely to continue about six months is to concede that this impact will cause prolonged financial pain.

However, having taken the softer approach for now, there is less need for hard spending to offset the measures. Asked repeatedly by MPs, Boris Johnson would only say that his government would "throw its arms around people" to support them. There was nothing more specific.

The PM’s infection measures apply only in England. And only his government has sufficient borrowing powers to add significantly to the huge economy bills already incurred.

So without a renewed flow of funds from the Treasury to help business and workers stay afloat financially, leaders of the devolved administrations, including Nicola Sturgeon, are constrained in going further than England in virus suppression measures.
