    Quote Message

I have made clear my belief Scotland’s government should look as much as possible like the people we represent. As well as being the first ever first minister from a minority ethnic background, I am pleased that a record number of women have agreed to serve, as well as a significant blend of younger and more experienced members. That said, every single appointment has been made on merit.

Humza Yousaf will face several challenges in his new job

Humza Yousaf faces some enormous challenges as he takes over from Nicola Sturgeon as SNP leader and Scotland's first minister.

Being the leader of a divided nation and a divided party is difficult.

The narrow nature of his victory does not make it any easier.

In his acceptance speech, he acknowledged the "bruising" nature of the leadership campaign and called for divisions to be healed quickly.

To some extent that will depend on what he decides to do next.

One thing we do know is that Kate Forbes, who finished second in the SNP leadership race, is to leave the Scottish government.

Paul Hutcheon tells BBC Scotland's Lunchtime Live the offer of the rural secretary job was a demotion for Forbes.

The Daily Record political editor says: "I'm not surprised she walked away, I think it's not a great thing for Humza Yousaf.

"His party is divided. He really wants to unify his party and with Kate Forbes on the backbenches that's not going to happen."

Back to the fall-out from the decision to offer Kate Forbes the rural affairs job - a position she has rejected, meaing she now leaves the Scottish government

Former SNP advisor told BBC Radio Scotland's Lunchtime Live that he was "really, really surprised" that Kate Forbes was not in Humza Yousaf's cabinet.

He said the offer of rural affairs was not "an insult" but it was a step down from finance minister "which is a bigger job, however you look at it".

"It is that stepping down that is obviously something she felt that she couldn't reconcile and she has decided to go to the backbenches," he said.

Collier tells the programme he does not expect Forbes to "make trouble" for the new first minister.

    Quote Message

From the people I have been talking to this morning there is a sense of despondency about this. People feel that the party needs to come together and in these first few hours of Humza Yousaf being first minister it hasn't happened.

As the clock ticked down to the appointed hour the chatter in the Court of Session died away.

For a few moments it was replaced by that rare quality in public life: utter silence and, outwardly at least, calm.

History was about to happen here, as it has so many times since the court first convened in 1532.

On the stroke of 10 the room rose as one and the judges walked on to the bench, bewigged and resplendent in ruby.

If he was nervous, Humza Yousaf did not show it but his countenance was grave as he was asked to stand and raise his hand for the three oaths of office to be administered.

Mr Yousaf did not speak a word but nodded thrice in answer to the Lord President's questions.

Scotland's government was now led by a Muslim; the descendant of immigrants; and a member of an ethnic minority community - all firsts.

Looking on with his parents, daughter and stepdaughter, the first minister's wife Nadia El-Nakla wiped away a tear.

Minutes after the ceremony she told me: "To see the name Yousaf on a piece of parchment after all the years of being told to go back to your own country, it's emotional."

Putting politics aside for one moment, what a line that is. What a moment this was.
