    Mr Hepburn says the resources produced for School's Autism Awareness Week are fantastic.

    The minister says the government's priorities for those with autism are a healthy life, choice and control independence and active citizenship.

    He says the government has a clear ambition for all Scotland's children.

    Conservative MSP Nanette Milne says the focus today is on the roles of schools and how they can help pupils to understand autism.

    Ms Milne says the Autism Toolbox will help teachers assess their methods and techniques.

    The Conservative MSP says for far too long the feelings of children with autism have been ignored. 

    She says other children need to know more about classmates on the autistic spectrum and schools hope to achieve this during Autism Awareness Week.

    SNP MSP Mark McDonald uses his motion to welcome the National Autistic Society (NAS) Scotland's first Schools Autism Awareness Week, external.

    It is scheduled to run from 14 to 18 March 2016. 

    The Aberdeen Donside MSP says the aim of the week is to encourage schools across the country to help pupils understand autism by planning fun and imaginative lessons, activities and assemblies.

    Mr McDonald says NAS Scotland has developed resources to support the schools that are taking part.

    He says there is a great potential for the week to improve the lives of autistic people by helping children and young people better understand the condition. 

    The SNP MSP hopes that a greater awareness of it in schools will equip a new generation with the knowledge to accept and empathise with autistic people.
